Brevard, N.C. - The Thanksgiving layoff did not affect Amber Roberts’ play in the least bit as she scored a career-high 25 points in the Tornados win over Converse College, 98-83.
With the win, the Tornados improve to 2-3 on the season, while Converse falls to 0-5 in 2008.
The Valkyries jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game behind the inside play of Kendra Bothof. The Tornados battled back as Coach Shannon Reid employed a full-court press, forcing several turnovers as Brevard tied the game up at 12 on a three-point play by Amanda Whitaker.
The teams traded baskets as Converse went up 16-15 with 13 minutes left in the first half, but the Tornados turned up the defensive pressure and forced five turnovers in the next four minutes as Brevard went on a 12-0 run highlighted by three pointers by both Holli Flippo and Roberts to go up, 28-16. The Tornados would not give up the lead for the remainder of the contest as they went into the half holding a 47-33 lead.
In the first half, the visiting Valkyries outshot the Tornados, 48 percent to 43 percent, but the Tornados connected on 46 percent of their shots from behind the arc to take the lead. Brevard also held the edge in the turnover battle by forcing 17 Converse turnovers while only giving the ball up seven times.
Whitaker and Flippo had 12 points apiece to pace the Tornados scoring effort in the first half. Bothof led the Valkyries with 12 points as well to go with a game-high six rebounds at the break.
The first three minutes of the second half belonged to Roberts as she connected on three shots from behind the arc as well recording a layup in scoring 11 of Brevard’s first 12 points of the second half as the Tornados built a 19 point lead. Brevard would coast the rest of the way as Converse was unable to come closer than 13 points the rest of the game in taking their second straight home win of the season, 98-83.
For the game, Roberts led the Tornados with 25 points, going 5-10 from behind the arc, as well as dishing out a game-high seven assists in the contest. She was joined in double figures by Amanda Whitaker who recorded her second double-double of the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds, Flippo with 15 points and Samantha Winn with 12 points.
Converse was led by Bothof who recorded a double-double with a game-high 32 points and 11 rebounds. Ashley Arff, 16, and Alaina Smith, 11, also scored double digits for the Valkyries.
The Tornados are back in action Saturday, December 6th as they open 2008-2009 South Atlantic Conference play, traveling to Greeneville, Tenn. to take on Tusculum College. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. Converse is on the road as well as they take on Mount Olive College on Tuesday, December 2nd, with a start time of 5:30 p.m.
