MARS HILL, N.C.- The Brevard College softball team rallied for a 3-2 game one victory over Mars Hill on their way to a doubleheader split at Ponder Field on Thursday afternoon, falling 6-4 in the second game.

Game 1: Brevard 3, Mars Hill 2
The Tornados rallied from a 2-0 deficit with a run in three straight innings on their way to victory in the opener, taking the lead on a Casey Whitaker RBI single in the 5th.

Whitaker’s go-ahead RBI scored Alyssa Miller, who reached on a walk with one out. Emily Boykin tied the game at 2-2 in the 4th when she scored on a Mars Hill throwing error after doubling to lead off the inning.

The Tornados sparked the comeback in the 3rd when Alyssa Miller singled to right to score Michelle Ray for their first run.

The Lions took the lead in the opening frame on two hits and an error, which led to both runs charged to starter Jamie Hrobak (S, 2) being unearned.  Alyssa Miller (W, 3-9) entered in the 4th and pitched 2.1 scoreless before Hrobak re-entered the circle to record the final four outs.

Game 2: Mars Hill 6, Brevard 4
The Tornados scored three runs over their final four at-bats but it wasn’t enough to overcome an early 4-1 lead for the Lions.

The Lions scored four runs in the first two innings against Casey Whitaker (L, 2-5), who was charged with four runs (three earned) on three hits and a walk in 1.1 innings.
Hrobak held the Lions to two runs over the final 4.2 innings as the Tornados tried to claw back.

BC got a run back in the 5th on a MHC throwing error and Whitaker made it a two-run game with a solo homer in the 7th, but Lions starter Jamie Booze (W, 6-1) settled down to get the final out following the Whitaker homer.

BC made it a two-run game in the 4th on Brittany Fowler’s RBI single to center before the Lions added two in the bottom of the 4th to push their lead back to four runs.

Mars Hill’s Jamie Hockaday parked a three-run homer in the 2nd to give the Lions a 4-1 lead and knock Whitaker from the circle.

The Tornados struck first on Whitaker’s RBI double in the top of the 1st, which Mars Hill answered with a run in the home half of the inning.

The Tornados are back in action on Saturday as they visit the Coker Cobras at Saleeby-Stokes Field for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
