Gaffney, S.C. – The Brevard College women’s basketball team played their first game in 12 days on Thursday night, falling to the Limestone Lady Saints 74-64 in Gaffney, S.C. in non-conference action.

The loss drops BC to 2-5 overall, while with the win Limestone moves to 3-4 on the season.

At the start of the game, the two teams traded baskets as the contest saw two ties and four lead changes in the first four minutes of play.  Limestone’s Shanna Cubitt put the Lady Saints up 8-6 on a lay-up at the 16:38 mark of the opening half, a lead that Limestone would not relinquish over the rest of the contest.

After a basket by the Tornados Lindsay Brendle cut the Limestone lead to two points at 10-8 at the 14:52 mark, the Lady Saints hit their offensive stride, outscoring the Tornados 33-22 for the remainder off the first half and taking a 43-30 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half, the Lady Saints pulled out to their largest lead of the game, as a made free throw by Addie Graves put Limestone up 21 points at 55-34 with 15:32 remaining in the contest.

Yet the heart of the Tornados showed through, as over the next eight minutes Brevard outscored Limestone 19-2 to cut the home team’s lead to four points at 57-53 on back-to-back free throws from junior Millie Wharton.

Despite the huge scoring run to get the Tornados back into the contest, BC ran out of gas down the stretch, as Limestone weathered the Tornados storm to hold on for the 74-64 win.

The Tornados were led by junior Samantha Winn, who had a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds for the game. BC’s Brendle and sophomore Amber Roberts each poured in 10 points apiece, while freshmen Anna Schlobohm and Holli Flippo added eight points apiece.

Limestone was led by Blanca Gonzalez, who poured in a game-high 26 points, while Lauren Pace and Tierney Burdett added 12 points apiece.

The Tornados will play one final game in the 2008 calendar year, as Brevard will travel to Bristol, Virginia to take on the Lady Cobras of Virginia Intermont College.  The Tornados defeated Virginia Intermont 79-58 at Brevard back on November 25 for their first win of the season.  Limestone will not return to action until the new year when they Lady Saints will play Mount Olive College on January 3.
