All-Marietta Shrine Tournament selection Darin Dellinger has been named Tornado Athlete of the Week for the 16th week of the 2008-09 athletic season. Dellinger earned 18 of the 34 votes cast by visitors of BCTornados.com, or 52.9%.
The junior guard from Stanley, N.C. led the Tornados to a 2-1 record last week, including a runner-up finish in the 38th Annual Marietta Shrine Tournament. In game one of the tournament against Emory & Henry, Dellinger had 18 points as the Tornados defeated the Wasps, 89-73. In the championship game against Marietta, he was again in double-figures with 14 points on 5-11 (45.5%) shooting. This past Saturday against Mars Hill, Dellinger contributed 12 points to the Tornados first South Atlantic Conference win in school history as Brevard defeated Mars Hill, 90-80.
Dellinger has started all 10 games for the Tornados, averaging 8.9 ppg, 2.9 rpg, and 2.0 apg. The Tornados are 7-3 (1-1 SAC) and head to Hickory, N.C. on Wednesday, January 7th, to continue their conference schedule against Lenoir-Rhyne University. Tip-off time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
The Tornado Athlete of the Week is determined by a fan poll on the frontpage of BCTornados.com. Candidates for the Tornado Athlete of the Week award are announced and voting opens every Saturday night at 10 p.m. Voting closes on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m.
