Mars Hill, N.C. - The Tornados came to Stanford Arena on Saturday afternoon looking for revenge for an earlier loss to Mars Hill on January 3rd, 63-46. Brevard College closed out the first half on a 24-10 run to bring the game within two, but the Tornados were unable to keep the momentum in the second half in falling to the Lions, 73-61.

Mars Hill opened the game, scoring on their first three times down the court as Jessica Blanford converted two layups and Taylor Deal added another as the Lions went up 6-0 at the 19:00 minute mark. Another layup by Blanford with 16:38 left in the first half, caused Coach Shannon Reid to call a timeout to talk to her Tornados.

Millie Wharton, entering the game for the first time, broke the scoreless streak that lasted the first 3:52 of the ball game. Samantha Winn added a jumper the next time down the court to bring the Tornados back within four, before a layup by Shamia Terry ended the Tornados run to put the game at 10-4.

Brittini Young and Holli Flippo traded three-pointers, before the Lions went on a 7-0 run, capped by a Deal layup off a pass from Young, prompting another Tornados timeout with the score 20-7, with 9:51 left in the first period of play.

The Lions run expanded to a 12-2 stretch before Winn drove in for a bank shot from the right block and Amanda Whitaker spun off the left block for a layup as the Tornado defense finally woke up. A layup by Jocelyn Williams was answered by a pull-up three from the top of the arc by Anna Schlobohm, before Whitaker put in another layup to bring the Tornados back within single digits at 29-20 before a timeout by Mars Hill with 4:23 left in the first half stopped the action.

Flippo put in her second and third three-pointers of the game, running her streak to seven games in a row with at least two three-pointers, and Winn drove in for a pair of layups to tie the game up inside the final minute of the first half, but a three-pointer by Young gave Mars Hill the lead at 35-33 as the teams headed to the locker room.

The Tornados closed out the first half on a 24-10 run as Brevard shot 44.8 percent (13-29) from the field, including 4-7 from three-point range.

Mars Hill was led in the first half by the leading scorer in the South Atlantic Conference, Young with 14 points, while going 4-6 from behind the arc.

The Lions came out running,, scoring the first eight points of the second half as the Tornados came out cold, before Wharton again broke the Brevard scoreless streak at the 15:32 mark with a layup and free throw as Mars Hill opened the half with a 43-36 lead.

A pair of free throws by Whitaker and a fast break layup by Flippo brought the game back to five, but Mars Hill surged back ahead to stay up by nine at 52-43 despite Kelly Hudler’s first three-pointer of the day.

Brevard cut the lead back within five with 5:42 left in the second half as Winn put in a jumper in the lane, but Clevenger responded on the other end to put the score a 62-55.
