Harrogate, Tenn. – Cold shooting doomed the Brevard Tornados Saturday night, as they fell big to Lincoln Memorial, 76-51, at Tex Turner Arena. Brevard (10-11, 2-9 South Atlantic Conference) has lost four games in a row.
Desmond Johnson (Lynch, Ky.) led the Railsplitters (12-10, 6-5 SAC) with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Stuart Miller (Harrogate, Tenn.) drained six three-pointers and scored 18 points of his own. Lincoln Memorial won the battle of the boards, 51 rebounds to Brevard’s 40.
Sam Carlisle (Raleigh, N.C.) scored a career-high 19 points for the Tornados. Jonathan Whitson (Clyde, N.C.) scored ten points of his own and pulled down ten rebounds for his eleventh double-double of the season. Brevard shot just 30.5% from the floor and connected on only 13 of 31 free throw attempts.
The Tornados scored the first basket of the game, a jumper from Carlisle 1:37 into the affair, but the ‘Spltters surged in control with a 12-1 run over the next 4:24, finished off by a Miller three, to lead, 12-3, with 13:59 left in the first period.
After the teams traded baskets for most of the half, LMU stretched the lead to double-figures, at 30-20, after a pair of free throws from Dominic Parker (Raleigh, N.C.) with 2:13 left in the period. The freebies were part of a 12-0 spurt to end the half and give Lincoln Memorial a 36-20 halftime lead.
The Railspitter lead was never less than 14 in the second half. A Miller three-pointer with 12:58 to go gave LMU a 20-point advantage, 48-28. The largest Lincoln Memorial lead came with 8:39 remaining, when a Johnson three-point play made the score 66-35.
Despite fouling out with 9:44 to play and posting a season-low point total, Whitson now stands at 1,347 career points, just nine behind Tyjuan Campbell for the all-time Brevard College scoring mark.
The Tornados play their final out-of-conference contest Wednesday at Boshamer Arena against North Greenville. Tip-off is 8 p.m. Lincoln Memorial host Mars Hill on Wednesday, also at 8 p.m.
