Brevard, N.C. - Back-to-back six-run innings spurred Brevard College to a 14-6 victory over Ohio Valley University Sunday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. In their first season as full-time NCAA Division II members, the Tornados are 3-0.
Shane Galloway (Rosman, N.C.) started and pitched five innings, earning the victory. Galloway (1-0) scattered six hits and allowed two runs, both earned. The left-hander struck out six and did not walk a batter. Kyle Lawrence (West Chester, Pa.) gave up four earned runs in four and a third innings to pick up the loss. The southpaw allowed just two hits but walked four and struck out three.
Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) and Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, N.C.) each had only one hit on the day, but both were home runs, the first of the season for each player. Brice Warner (Clover, S.C) was 2-5 with a triple and 3 RBI's, while Matthew Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.) was 3-4 with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI's.
Ohio Valley (0-3) got on the scoreboard first, in the second inning. With two outs, Ben Meneley (Tavares, Fla.) blooped a single into left field, scoring Matt Wharton (Hickory, N.C.) to make the score 1-0.
The Fighting Scots doubled the lead in the fifth inning, when Jake Kight (Adamsville, Ohio) smashed a solo home run to put the visitors up by two.
The Tornado offense came alive in the bottom half of the fifth. After Mullis drew a walk to lead off the frame, Corn launched a moon shot over the right-center field wall to tie the game, 2-2. Three batters later, with runners on first and second, Warner tripled to the left-center gap, scoring Kellen Moman (Greenville, S.C.) and Adam Arrowood (Asheville, N.C.) to make the score 4-2. Pruitt added a run by singling Warner home in the next at-bat; later Pruitt would score on a wild pitch from Kight, who had relieved Lawrence earlier in the inning, to make the score 6-2.
Brevard put the game away in the bottom of the sixth. With two on and one out, Warner lined a double off of Kellen Shepherd (Bloomfield, N.Y.), scoring Moman to make the score 7-2. Pruitt followed, scoring Warner and Vance Crook (West Union, S.C.) on a double to make the lead 9-2. The freshman came home on a Josh Miller (Hendersonville, N.C.) single later in the inning, then Mullis capped the scoring barrage with a two-run homer to make the score 12-2.
The Fighting Scots added a run in the seventh. With Jacob White (Elkin, N.C.) pitching, Kight singled home Justin Wharton (Hickory, N.C.) to make the tally 12-3.
Brevard came back with a pair in the bottom of the eighth. Pinch hitter Michael Calhoun (Florence, S.C.) doubled just inside of the third base bag, scoring Mullis and Bryant Smith (Florence, S.C.) to light up the scoreboard at 14-3.
A trio of Ohio Valley runs in the ninth closed the scoring account. Josh Sizemore (Belpre, Ohio) singled with the bases loaded to score Kyle Fleak (Parkersburg, W.V.), and Cory McCune (Athens, Ohio) reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Kyle York (Villa Hills, Ky.). Shepherd finished the scoring with two outs, a single that brought home Justin Wharton to make the score 14-6.
