WINN'S 32 CARRIES THE TORNADOS TO SEASON SWEEP OF THE CRUSADERS, 82-62

Brevard takes their sixth win of the season

Brevard, N.C. - Samantha Winn scored 16 points and pulled down five rebounds in the first half on Wednesday night. In the second half, Winn nearly matched it, scoring another 16 on her way to a career high 32 points in the game and just missed the double-double with nine rebounds, as she single-handedly carried the Tornados to the season sweep over North Greenville, 82-62.

Winn, with her 32 points, and Holli Flippo with 13, going 3-5 from behind the arc, were the only Tornados (6-16, 0-11 SAC) to score in double figures in the contest.  Winn went 10-20 (50 percent) from the field, and 12-15 (80 percent) from the charity stripe as she recorded the first 30 point game of her career. Brevard as a whole shot 75.0 percent (21-28) from the free throw line and forced 27 NGU turnovers, compared to only 16 of their own.

The Crusaders (12-13) were led by Christina Carlis with 13 points and Amanda Milner with 11 points, eight rebounds. Karly Stache, the talented freshman for North Greenville who scored 24 points the first time these teams met back on January 24th, was smothered by the Tornados defensive pressure, shooting only 30 percent (3-10) from the field and 1-4 from behind the arc.

North Greenville started off the game up 11-5 as the Crusaders came out running behind Carlis and Nikki Wood. The duo combined to score the first nine points for North Greenville, before the Tornados came storming back. Amanda Whitaker converted a pair from the line, and then Winn put in a jumper and a layup to tie the game up at 11 with 15:50 left in the first half.

Three-pointers by Lindsay Brendle and Kelly Hudler sandwiched another Winn layup before a free throw by North Greenville’s Whitney Smith ended the 14-4 Tornados run at the 12:16 mark with Brevard ahead, 19-16.

The game was tied back up at 22 with 9:54 remaining in the opening period when Stache hit a three-pointer. However, the Tornados used back-to-back shots from behind the arc by Flippo to go up by six with 7:28 left on the clock.

The Crusaders tied the game back up at 36 when Karly Stache hit a pair of free throws, but Flippo added a free throw and Winn put in four more points, including a baseline to baseline fast-break layup with 17 seconds left on the clock to go up by five. A jumper in the lane by Carlis at the buzzer brought the game back within three as the teams went into the locker room.

Carlis started off the second half with a three pointer on North Greenville’s opening possession and Milner added a pair of layups to put the Crusaders up by four, 1:48 into period, before Samantha Winn took over the game.

Winn put in a pair of layups to tie the game up, as the Tornados went on a 15-1 run highlighted by Hudler’s second three-pointer of the game, and Flippo stealing the ball from Carlis, driving the length of the court and putting in the layup and additional foul shot as Brevard went up 56-46 with 12:11 left in the game.

A jumper by North Greenville’s Mindy Greenstone with 7:50 left in the game brought the Crusaders back within eight, but that was the closest the Tornados would allow, as Brevard went on a 20-8 run to close out the game with their sixth victory of the season, 82-62.

The Tornados jump back into SAC play on Saturday, February 14th, as they make the trip to Wingate, N.C. for a rematch against the Wingate Bulldogs. The Tornados fell at home to Wingate on January 17th, 94-88, as the Bulldogs made a 20-2 run late in the game to come back for the victory. Tipoff for the BC-Wingate game is set for 2:00 p.m. North Greenville returns home to Tigerville, S.C. to host Knoxville College, also on Saturday, at 2 p.m.
