Dahlonega, Ga. - The Brevard College men's tennis squad opened the 2009 season with a win Thursday, narrowly beating North Georgia, 5-4.
Brevard (3-0) won two of three matches in the doubles portion of the afternoon. Grant Partrick and Adrien Saulais defeated Cole Altizer and Jarred Fisher, 8-3, in the top flight match, to score the first point for the Saints. But Brevard's No. 2 duo of Konstantin Savelyev and Andrew Thompson downed Luciano Paes Neto and Daniel Anguilon, 8-6, and third-flight combo Heikki Riikonen and Nate Lyles narrowly won over Brandon Sloan and Samuel Moore, 9-8 (7-4).
North Georgia (1-2) won the singles points in the top two flights. Paes Neto got past Riikonen, 6-4, 6-2, and Moore defeated Savelyev, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. The Tornados won the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, as Fisher squeezed past Partrick, 7-6 (7-6), 2-6, 6-3, and Thompson beat Anguilon, 6-3, 6-2. Fisher's match was the last one on the court and won the event for Brevard
Brevard clinched the win by splitting the final two singles matches. Saulais downed Altizer, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), but Shane Apps scored won the No. 6 match for the Tornados, 6-4, 6-2, over Sloan.
Brevard returns to the courts on Friday, February 20, with a match at Wingate. The match starts at 2 p.m. North Georgia plays at Francis Marion on Sunday.
