Dahlonega, Ga. - Coach Paul Thomson's Brevard College women's tennis team opened 2009 with a bang Thursday, beating North Georgia, 8-1.
The Tornados (3-0) started the match by claiming two of three doubles points. Lindsay Shaeffer and Kim Dixon took the No. 1 match, 8-5, over Velina Boteva and Maria Dreaden, and Lindsay Hostetter and Kayley Duval doubled Meredith Cash and Katherine Harrison, 8-4. North Georgia (0-3) put up their only point in No. 3 doubles, where Ashley Marie Jordan and Mallory Perloff outlasted Sara Douglas and Jennifer Nyman, 9-8 (7-2).
The Tornados swept the singles portion of the event. Shaeffer waltzed past Boteva, 6-4, 6-1 in the top flight, and the No. 2 point was won by Hostetter, 6-2, 6-2 over Dreaden. Duval won the No. 3 match over Harrison, 6-3, 6-3, and Dixon waxed Cash, 6-2, 6-1 in the fourth flight. Douglas edged Jordan, 6-4, 6-3 to take the No. 5 match-up, and Merek Slagle ended the day with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Perloff in No. 6 singles.
Brevard's next match is Friday, February 20, a SAC battle with Wingate. The match begins at 2 p.m. North Georgia returns to action Sunday against Francis Marion.
