Tornados rally from four-run deficit

Brevard, N.C. – Matthew Pruitt’s two-out, two-run single in the ninth inning scored Adam Arrowood and Spencer Linn, capping a furious rally and sending the Brevard College Tornados to a walk-off 7-6 win over Mercyhurst College Sunday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. Win the win, Brevard (5-1) takes two of three from the Lakers in the weekend series.

Luke Smithson (Mills River, N.C.) pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief work to get his first win of the season. Jamie Walczak (Painesville, Ohio) took the loss for Mercyhurst.

Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.) went 2-6 on the afternoon and drove home three runs. Brice Warner (Clover, S.C.) had 2 RBI, while Will Scholer (Norwalk, Iowa) and Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, N.C.) each drove home one. Jonathan Dziomba (Williamsville, N.C.) was 2-5 with 2 RBI for the Lakers, while Ethan Santora (Gates Mills, Ohio) homered.

Mercyhurst (1-2) got on the board in the first inning, tagging Brevard starter Shane Galloway (Rosman, N.C.) for an early run. Jeff Stoll’s (Barberton, Ohio) RBI groundout plated Walczak, making the score 1-0.

The Tornados briefly took the lead with a two-run bottom of the first. Pruitt doubled home Warner off of Laker starter Nick Gillung (Worthville, Pa.) to tie the game, and Mullis singled with one out, scoring Pruitt. The Tornados had the bases loaded with one out, but could not add to the lead.

The visitors tied the game in the second inning. Santora, the first batter of the inning, launched a home run over the left-center wall to tie the game at two apiece.

Mercyhurst retook the lead in the fifth frame. After Galloway walked the first two batters of the inning and Trey Bennett (Hudson, Ohio) loaded the bases with a perfectly-placed bunt single, Thomas Kufel (Marilla, N.Y.) scored on a passed ball and Dziomba scored two with a double. After Payne Parker (Florence, S.C.) relieved Galloway, the visitors scored another as Dziomba touched home by way of another passed ball.

Brevard narrowed the gap with two runs in the eighth. With Jeremy Cressley (Corry, Pa.) pitching, Warner singled home Linn (Fletcher, N.C.) to make the score 6-3. Two batters later, Scholer scored Jason Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C) with a single to make the score 6-4.

The Tornados won the game with three runs in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Warner coaxed a walk off of Walczak to score Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) and draw the home side within a run. The next batter, Pruitt, lined a single off the glove off Walczak and into right field, scoring Linn and Arrowood (Asheville, N.C.) to secure the victory.

Brevard plays their first road game of the season on Wednesday, a 2:30 match-up with Erskine. Mercyhurst plays at Charleston (W.Va.) on Friday at noon.
