Wingate, N.C. – The Brevard men’s tennis team was beaten in their South Atlantic Conference opener on Friday afternoon, 8-1, at the hands of Wingate. The Tornados (3-1, 0-1 South Atlantic Conference) were swept in the singles action.
Brevard’s top flight doubles duo of Cole Altizer (Charlotte, N.C.) and Jarred Fisher (Prime Rose East, South Africa) notched the only Tornado point of the day, 8-4, over Wingate’s Bruno Prudence (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Braeden Patchell (Oakville, Ontario). The Bulldogs took the next two pairs points, as Flavio Rathsam (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Brenden Molan (Charlotte, N.C.) took the No. 2 match, 8-2, over Konstantin Savelyev (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) and Andrew Thompson (San Antonio, Texas) and the third flight went to Fernando Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) and Jose Valarezo (Guayaquil, Ecuador), 8-2 over Heikki Riikonen (Kuopio, Finland) and Nate Lyles (Summerville, S.C.).
Wingate (2-3, 1-0 SAC) won all six solo points. Prudence knocked down Riikonen, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, Mitchell Lvovsky (Dania, Fla.) beat Savelyev, 6-0, 6-1 and Patchell swept Fisher, 7-5, 6-1. The final three matches went to Andrew Owen (Kitchener, Ontario), 6-0, 6-0 over Lyles, Lichtenstein, 6-2, 6-2 over Altizer and Rathsam, 6-3, 6-3 over Shane Apps (Alpharetta, Ga.).
The Tornados return the court Saturday against Queens. Wingate’s next match ins March 7, at East Carolina.
