Brevard, N.C. – Kyle Moore poured in 30 points and Tusculum College spoiled Senior Day for Brevard, winning 72-55 Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Gymnasium. Moore (Gainesville, Fla.) is just the second player all season to score 30 against Brevard.
Following Moore’s lead was Ryan Troutman (Mt. Washington, Ky.), who scored 15 points. The Pioneers (18-8, 10-5 South Atlantic Conference) shot 48.0% from the floor and hit 11 of 22 three-pointers. Tusculum outrebounded Brevard (12-13, 3-11 SAC), 31-24; the Tornados are 0-5 this season when losing the battle of the boards.
Jonathan Whitson (Clyde, N.C.) scored 21 points to lead the Tornados. Seniors Joseph Chilton (Brasstown, N.C.), Radosav Babic (Podgorica, Montenegro) and Sean Ferretti (Amherst, N.Y.) scored nine, three and two points respectively in their final home game.
Tusculum led for all but 3:20 of the game. Moore put the Pioneers ahead with a pair of free throws at the 17:16 mark of the first half to make the score 4-2. After Brevard tied the game on an Andrew Freeman (Ashville, N.C.) three-pointer at the 11:34 mark, Troutman put the visitors back in front with a trifecta 36 seconds later.
Tusculum’s first double-digit lead was 26-16 after another Moore free throw with 7:27 left in the first half. The lead was 39-28 at the half in favor of the Pioneers.
Tusculum’s largest lead came with 6:04 to play, when Jimmy Boone (Greeneville, Tenn.) hit a three-pointer to put the Pioneers up, 61-39.
Brevard, which entered the game tied with Carson-Newman for the eighth and final spot in the upcoming Food Lion SAC Tournament, returns to action Wednesday, when they play at Newberry. Tusculum hosts Mars Hill on Wednesday; both games start at 8 p.m.
