Brevard, N.C. – Jared Richmond homered and drove home four runs as Tusculum College completed a three-game sweep of Brevard College, 11-4, Sunday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. On the weekend, Richmond (Fort Smith, Ark.) stroked two home runs and tallied eight RBIs.
C.J. Hillyer (3-1; Abington, Mass.) pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up three unearned runs, to secure the win. Shane Galloway (1-2; Rosman, N.C.) was touched up for nine runs (five earned) in six innings to take the loss. Tio McLean (Laurel Hill, N.C.) pitched the final 3 1/3 innings for the Pioneers to earn his third save of the season.
Tusculum (12-7, 6-0 South Atlantic Conference) scored twice in the 1st inning, an a two-run double from Sean Cotten (Mooresville, N.C.) and added two more runs in the 4th, on a run-scoring hit from Richmond, who eventually came home on a passed ball.
The Pioneers scored four more runs on a pair of home runs in the 6th. Richmond and Aaron Hudgins (Kingsport, Tenn.) each mashed a two-run bomb to make the score 8-0.
Brevard (6-11, 0-6 SAC) touched home three times in the bottom of the 6th. Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) and Josh Miller (Hendersonville, N.C.) each had a run-scoring single, with Miller’s driving home two runs, to cut into the deficit.
Tusculum tacked on a run in the 7th, on a run-scoring single from Sean Finucane (Cortland, N.Y.), but Brevard responded with a, RBI single from Matthew Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.) to make the score 9-4.
The final two Pioneer markers came in the 9th. Nate Grabowski (Pennellville, N.Y.) scored when Miller’s throw to second in attempt to gun down a base stealer went wide, and Richmond added another RBI single to make the final score 11-4.
Brevard hosts Alderson-Broaddus on Tuesday at 3 p.m., while Tusculum resumes their season at Limestone Tuesday at 2 p.m.
