Hilton Head, S.C. – The Brevard College men’s tennis team kicked off their spring break trip in style, routing Wheaton College, 7-2, Sunday afternoon.
In doubles play, Brevard (5-2, 0-2 South Atlantic Conference) won all three points. Konstantin Savelyev and Cole Altizer beat Gregory Poulin and Cullen Garrity, 8-2, in the top flight. The 2nd point belonged to Heikki Riikonen and Jarred Fisher, 8-3 over James Little and Neall Oliver, and the third flight was the domain of Andrew Thompson and Nate Lyles, 8-3 over Kyle Hudgins and Brian Krantz.
Wheaton (0-2) took the first two singles points, and Oliver beat Savelyev, 6-4, 2-6, 10-3 and Little got past Thompson, 6-4, 2-6, 10-5.
But the Tornados rallied to win the final four points in dominating fashion. Riikonen clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Poulin in the third spot, and Altizer beat Hudgins after the Wheaton player retired at 6-0, 2-0. In the No. 5 match, Fisher drilled Harry Altman, 6-0, 6-1, and at No. 6, Shane Apps beat Nii Manfoi Davies, 6-2, 6-0.
The Tornados continue their Hilton Head tour tomorrow against St. John Fisher at 8 a.m.
