Hilton Head, S.C. – The Brevard College women’s tennis team started their spring break trip to the beach with an easy win over Wheaton College, 7-2, Sunday afternoon. The win snaps a brief two-game losing slide for the Tornados.
Singles play came first on Sunday, and Brevard (5-3, 0-2 South Atlantic Conference) took five of six points. At the top spot, Lindsay Shaffer won a tight battle over Catherine Teague, 5-7, 6-2, 10-7, and in the No. 2 spot, Lindsay Hostetter beat Sarah Geocaris, 6-3, 6-4. Kayley Duval won the third flight, 6-3, 6-3 over Ellen Van Faasen, and the fourth match was taken by Jennifer Nyman, 4-6, 6-4, 10-3, over Rosalyn Chesky.
Wheaton’s only singles point came at No. 5, where Mallory Farmer beat Kim Dixon, 0-6, 6-4, 10-6, but the Tornados took the sixth point, as Sara Douglas beat Oriana Federico, 6-0, 6-2.
The Tornados also took two of three doubles points over Wheaton (11-4). Shaeffer and Dixon beat Teague and Geocaris, 8-6, in the top flight, and in the second match Hostetter and Duval slid past Van Faasen and Chesky, 8-5. Wheaton took the No. 3 point, as Farmer and Federico beat Nyman and Merek Slagle, 8-4.
The Tornados play their second Hilton Head match tomorrow against Tiffin.
