Hilton Head, S.C. - Brevard College coach Paul Thomson knew his team's annual spring break trip to the South Carolina coast was a great opportunity to jump start the spring season. But perhaps even Thomson didn't know the result of the trip would be perfection. The Tornados finished their run of five matches in five days with a 7-2 win over Upper Iowa on Thursday, giving the team a victory in all five Hilton Head matches.
"What a great way for our team to get hot as we head into South Atlantic Conference play," Thomson said after the win. "I am so proud of the way our ladies competed and the success that we have had."
Brevard (9-3) started the day by taking two of three doubles matches from the Peacocks. Lindsay Shaeffer and Kim Dixon kicked the win off with an 8-4 victory over Kasey Huisman and Mallery Cox. Lindsay Hostetter and Kayley Duval followed with an 8-6 triumph over Betsy Limburg and Courtney Romer. The only Peacock point of the pairs portion came at No. 3, where Jennifer Nyman and Sara Douglas fell to Kelsey Montgomery and Nicole Henry, 8-4.
The Tornados took the top three flights in singles action. Shaeffer beat Huisman, 6-4, 6-3, Hostetter routed Montgomery, 6-3, 6-0 and Duval won over Cox, 6-1, 6-3. Upper Iowa won at the No. 4 spot, where Romer beat Dixon, 6-2, 6-2, but the Tornados look the final two courts. Douglas beat Limburg at No. 5, 6-4, 7-5 and Merek Slagle beat Henry, 6-1, 6-3.
The Tornados return to SAC play next Thursday with a 2 p.m. match at Catawba, while Upper Iowa plays Bemidji State on March 21 at 3 p.m. eastern.
