Brevard, N.C. – In 2007-08, the Brevard College men’s tennis team battled the injury bug all season long, as the Tornados compiled a 9-11 overall record in their second provisional year as NCAA Division II members and first year as a South Atlantic Conference provisional member.
In the Tornados nine win season, which included a five match winning streak, three wins came against NCAA Division II teams, with two of those three wins coming versus SAC foes.
After a number of individuals had strong showings in the BC Mountain Invitational tournament to kick off the fall season, the Tornados battled injuries and struggled the rest of the fall, dropping two matches.
With a 0-2 start, the Tornados jumped off to a great start to the spring, picking up a 6-3 road win over SAC opponent Lenoir-Rhyne on February 29th to move to 1-2 on the season.
Following three consecutive losses to No. 35 Tusculum, NCAA DI member Clemson and the Indians of Newberry College, BC headed to Hilton Head, S.C. for their spring break trip.
On their spring break trip, the Tornados were undefeated, posting a 5-0 record in Hilton Head, S.C. to move to 6-5 on the young season.
However, BC had their five-match winning streak snapped on March 25, as the Tornados fell to the Eagles of Carson-Newman 3-6, which started a three match losing streak for BC.
The Tornados bounced back to defeat Spartanburg Methodist and Maryville College at home on March 29, to move to 8-9 on the season with only four matches remaining.
In their final four matches, the Tornados fell to Wingate, North Georgia and UNC-Asheville, while picking up a 5-4 victory of Lincoln Memorial to finish the season with a 9-11 record.
The Tornados were led by sophomore Andrew Thompson (San Antonio, TX), who posted a team-high 12 wins on the year in singles action, with nine of those victories coming at the No. 2 position.
Fellow teammates Cole Altizer (Matthews, NC) and Shane Apps (Alpharetta, Ga.) also had double-digit wins on the year in singles play, as Altizer had 11 wins while Apps record 10 wins for the seasons.
In doubles play, the Tornados had 11 different teams compete over the season, with the duo of Thompson and junior Konstantin Savelyev (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) picking up 10 wins on the season, with all 10 coming at the No. 2 doubles spot.
The Tornados freshmen duo of Altizer and Jared Fisher (Primerose East, South Africa) recorded nine wins on the season, with all nine coming at the No. 1 doubles position.
With all of the players set to return for the 2008-09 season, the Tornados will look to build on this year, which had a lot of positive and exciting points throughout the year. Head Coach Thomson and Brevard College will look to the experience gained from this season as well as a number of good recruits to have the Tornados ready to compete day-in and day-out in 2008-09.
