Salisbury, N.C. - Brevard College captured their first South Atlantic Conference win of the season Thursday, sweeping Catawba, 7-0, at the Johnson Tennis Center. The final two singles matches of the day were rained out, but the weather could not dampen the Tornado charge.
The Tornados (10-3, 1-2 SAC) were barely tested in doubles matches. Lindsay Shaeffer and Kim Dixon opened the proceedings with an 8-2 rout of the top Catawba (6-6, 0-2 SAC) duo of Jen Denyes and Kara Zielinski, and Lindsay Hostetter and Kayley Duval beat Candace Hall and Nikiah Knox, 8-4. Merek Slagle and Sara Douglas captured the final pairs point, 8-3, over Megan Kittell and Steffi Cook.
All four completed singles matches went Brevard's way. Shaeffer beat Denyes, 6-1, 6-1, and Hostetter got past Zielinski, 6-1, 6-1. Duval, the reigning SAC Player of the Week, beat Cook, 6-2, 6-2, and Dixon won a fairly close match over Knox, 6-2, 7-5.
Jennifer Nyman was just a game away from victory when her singles match against Hall was halted, and Douglas had just started her pairing with Kim Renspie when the rains came.
Having won six straight matches, the Tornados host Lincoln Memorial Saturday at 1 p.m., while Catawba takes on Livingstone next Wednesday at 3 p.m.
