CARNIE AND RENNIE TIE FOR FIRST AT THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE

Brevard finishes tied for second, one stroke behind Tusculum

Etowah, N.C. - The Tornados teed off with fellow SAC opponents Newberry, Tusculum and Catawba at the Blue Ridge Mountain Challenge on Saturday afternoon at the Etowah Valley Country Club. Brevard had two tie for first overall for the one day event, but Tusculum took home the title with a one day total of 306, 18-over par.

Grant Carnie and Thomas Rennie carded rounds of 73, 1-over to join Catawba’s John O’Planick with the low score of the day as the teams dealt with the tough course that will be used in next month’s (April 20-21) 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament.

As a team, the Tornados finished tied for second overall with #23-ranked Newberry at 307, one stroke behind winner Tusculum. Brevard placed four golfers in the top four for the day as Carnie and Rennie were joined by fourth place finishers Myles Johnston and Bret McGaughey.

Thomas Bush finished his round tied for 12th at 77, 5-over, while Chris White carded a 78 for a 16th place finish.

Champion Tusculum was led by Chase Carroll who joined McGaughey and Johnston in fourth with a 75, 3-over. Houston White was also in the top 10 for the Pioneers with a seventh place finish at 76. Darren Christie (77, t-12th) and Lawson George (78, t-16th) finished in the top 20 as Tusculum took home the trophy.

Newberry was led by a pair of seventh place finishers in Stephen Holmes and Brandon Burnside as they each carded a 76 for their round. Ben Lown (77, 12th) Matthew Campbell (78, 16th) and Daniel Stanley (79, 19th) were all in the top 20, the only team to achieve this feat in the Challenge.

Catawba, led by O’Planick’s first place finish, took fourth in the Challenge.

The Tornados take one day off before heading back to the course on Monday, March 23rd, in Carrollton, Ga. for the first day of the West Georgia Invitational.
