Crusaders score six in extra frame

Brevard, N.C. – North Greenville University scored sixth runs in the 10th inning to beat Brevard College, 10-4, Tuesday afternoon in NCAA Division II baseball action. Earlier, in the 8th inning, the Crusaders had tied the game at 4 on a Tyler Callicutt home run.

Derek Brown (2-2; Iva, S.C.) picked up the win for North Greenville (6-26) after pitching scoreless frames in the 9th and 10th. Luke Smithson (1-1; Mills River, N.C.) gave up three runs in 2/3 of an inning to pick up the loss. Brevard starter Spencer Linn (Fletcher, N.C.) did not factor into the decision but did pitch perhaps his finest game of the season, allowing only two unearned runs in seven innings while striking out ten Crusaders.

Brevard (7-19) struck first in the opening inning. With two out and the bases loaded, Kellen Moman (Greenville, S.C.) drew a walk after an 11-pitch at-bat and Josh Miller (Hendersonville, N.C.) was hit by a pitch to put the home nine up, 2-0.

The Crusaders tied the game in the 5th with a pair of unearned runs. Markus Duckworth (Belmont, N.C.) scored on a throwing error by Brevard third baseman Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, N.C.), and Dayton Lupton (Milner, Ga.) brought a run home with a fielder’s choice to knot the affair at two runs each.

The Tornados retook control in the 6th. Vance Crook (West Union, S.C.) led the inning off with a double, and two batters later was standing on third with two out when M.A. Dozier (Cumming, Ga.) was called on to pinch hit. Dozier delivered, blooping a hit over the second baseman’s head to put Brevard on top by a run.

Brevard tacked on a run in the 7th. William Scholer (Norwalk, Iowa) roped a double that just touched down inside the left field line, scoring Brice Warner (Clover, S.C.) to make the score 4-2.

The road team tied the game in the 8th. With a runner on first and one out, Callicutt (Pittsboro, N.C.) sent a 1-0 pitch from Brevard reliever Jacob White (Elkin, N.C.) over the left field fence to send the game to square one, at 4-4.

Todd Anderson’s team threatened to end the game in the bottom of the 9th but was kept off the board by Brown. Warner led off the inning by drawing a walk and advanced to third with two out. But Brown got pinch hitter Jason Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C.) to pop out in foul territory, sending the game to extra frames.

After finishing the 9th inning on the mound for Brevard, Smithson retired the first batter he faced in the 10th. But Derek Fulmer (Pelion, S.C.), Callicutt, and Anthony Foulk (Genoa, Ill.) all singled, with Foulk’s plating Fulmer, to put the Crusaders on top. Payne Parker (Florence, S.C.) came on to pitch, and allowed a run-scoring fielder’s choice to Duckworth and an RBI single to Cory Hinton (Rock Hill, S.C.), then hit Chris Harbit to load the bases.

With the score 7-4, Tommy Yearty (Satellite Beach, Fla.) came in to relieve Parker. The junior allowed Duckworth to score on a wild pitch and gave up an single to David Frazier (Snellville, Ga.) that scored a run. Harbit came home to score on a throwing error by Brevard’s Miller as Frazier stole second, ending the North Greenville rally with the score 10-4.

The Tornados are back in action Wednesday as they host Anderson University, a 3 p.m. start. North Greenville has the weekend off before playing Anderson next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
