Wingate, N.C. - A break in the weekend rain shower finally allowed the baseball squads from Brevard College and Wingate University to play a doubleheader Sunday afternoon, with the Bulldogs winning both games, 14-5 and 28-6. Wingate improves to 16-18 (5-6 South Atlantic Conference) with the win, while the Tornados fall to 7-21 (1-12 SAC)
Game One - Wingate 14, Brevard 5
The opening game began Saturday morning, with the Bulldogs taking a 3-0 lead, before rain stopped the game after three innings. When the teams returned on Sunday, the hosts maintained the win, 14-5.
Gray Carden (1-0; Leesburg, Ga.) picked up the win for Wingate, while Seth Laughter (1-4; Fletcher, N.C.) took the loss after pitching the three Saturday innings for the Tornados.
The Bulldogs used a slew of home runs to build a 7-0 lead after four innings and stay in front. Mark Letchworth (Greenville, N.C.) was 4-5 with a homer and four RBIs, while Chris Vasquez (Tyrone, Ga.) was 2-4 with a bomb and 4 RBIs of his own. Aaron Knowles (Hope Town, Bahamas) and Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) also hit home runs.
The Tornados scored all five of their runs in the 5th innings off of Carden. Spencer Linn (Fletcher, N.C.) drove home the first run with an RBI single, and William Scholer (Norwalk, Iowa) chased home another with a run-scoring double. Jason Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C.) drew a bases loaded walk, and Kellen Moman (Greenville, S.C.) capped the scoring with a two-run double.
Merrill got on base in all four of his plate appearances, going 2-2 with a double and two walks.
Game Two - Wingate 28, Brevard 6 (7 inn.)
The 'Dogs hit four more home runs in the finale, winning 28-6. Heath Weatherford (Rockingham, N.C.) was 3-4 with two homers and four driven in, while Knowles and Kevin Childs (Anderson, S.C.) also went deep. Brevard's Josh Miller (Hendersonville, N.C.) took a trip of his own to Souvenir City, crushing a three-run shot to deep right centerfield in the 6th.
Jim Ealy (2-0; Angier, N.C.) pitched a scoreless 5th inning to pick up the win. Shane Galloway (2-4; Rosman, N.C.) took the loss for Brevard.
Wingate scored all six times they came to bat, including eight runs in the 5th frame. Miller was 2-2 for the Tornados, and drew a walk.
Both teams play a make-up SAC doubleheader on Tuesday, with Brevard playing at Mars Hill at 1 p.m. and Wingate hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 4 p.m.
