Tornados win first game, 8-6, lose second, 9-3

Mars Hill, N.C. - Brevard designated hitter Josh Miller launched a two-out, three-run home run in the 7th inning, his second of the day, to lead the Tornados past Mars Hill, 8-6, Tuesday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at Henderson Field. Game two was a victory for the Lions, 9-3.

Game One - Brevard 8, Mars Hill 6 (7 inn.)

The Tornados (8-22, 2-13 SAC) homered four times in the first seven-inning game. With Brevard down 4-0, Miller (Hendersonville, N.C.) hit a two-run shot in the 4th inning to put the road team on the board. Kellen Moman (Greenville, S.C.) and Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) went back-to-back with solo bombs in the 5th.

Down 5-4 heading into the 7th, the Tornados tied the game on an RBI double from William Scholer (Norwalk, Iowa). Two batters later, Miller crushed a pitch over the centerfield wall, scoring himself and two others, to give the Tornados a lead they did
not relinquish.

Luke Smithson (Mills River, N.C.) was called upon to pitch the 7th for the Tornados. The sophomore allowed a run on an RBI groundout from Brian Williams (Orlando, Fla.) and eventually loaded the bases with one out. But Smithson retired the final two batters of the game to preserve the win and pick up the save.

Seth Laughter (2-4; Fletcher, N.C.) picked up the win after pitching six innings, allowing five runs while striking out two. Thomas White (3-2; Irmo, S.C.) allowed two runs in an 2/3 of an inning to take the loss. Smithson's save was his first of the season.

Miller was 2-4 with five home runs. Including Sunday's second game against Wingate, the junior had three home runs and eight RBIs in two games.

Game Two - Mars Hill 9, Brevard 3

The Lions (19-17, 7-8 SAC) scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back, winning the finale, 9-3. Chad Jarvis (2-1; Clemmons, N.C.) pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) to pick up the victory, while Corey Rau (Tunkhannock, Pa.) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for his first save of the season. Ryan Toney (1-5; Johnson City, Tenn.) took the loss for the Tornados, allowing five runs (four earned) in three innings on the hill.

The big blast for the Lions came in the opening frame, when Matt Oleski (West Seneca, N.Y.) hit a three-run homer to put the hosts up, 4-0.

The Tornados came back with a tally in the 2nd. Moman grounded into a double play, allowing Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, N.C.) to come home and slice the deficit to three runs.

Trailing 5-1, the Tornados added another run in the 4th. Mullis scored on another double play, this one off the bat of Jason Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C.) to make the tally 5-2.

After Mars Hill scored again in the 5th, Corn brought home the final Tornado run of the day with an RBI single to bring Brevard within three runs of the home nine, at 6-3. But the Lions put the game out of reach with three runs in the 6th, including a bases loaded walk drawn by Oleski, giving him four RBIs for the second game.

Mullis was 3-4 and scored twice for the Tornados, while Oleski was 2-3 and also scored two times.

The Tornados are back in action Wednesday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Virginia Intermont, while the Lions host Limestone Wednesday at 1 p.m. in a single game.
