Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College Tornados gave a valiant effort by narrowly fell to NCAA Division I member UNC Asheville on Thursday, 4-3. Andrew Thompson was the star for Brevard (15-4), taking wins in both singles and doubles matches.
Under Division I rules, the three doubles matches combined for just one total point, which the Bulldogs (5-14) claimed with two pairs wins. Mauricio Correa and Joe May edged Konstantin Savelyev and Cole Altizer on court one, 8-6, while Jonas Brobeck and Nathan White slid past Jarred Fisher and Heikki Riikonen in a tiebreak, 9-8 (10-1). Though it did not affect the final match tally, Brevard won at No. 3 doubles, where Thompson and Nate Lyles doubled up Alexander Greer and Alex Appelt, 8-4.
Correa bested Savelyev, 6-2, 6-0, in the opening singles match, while Brobeck won a three-setter on court two, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, over Riikonen. The third court, which was the last to finish, clinched the point for the visitors, as May edged Altizer, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Tornados won on courts four, five and six. Fisher went the distance to beat White, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, Thompson beat Appelt, 6-3, 6-4, and Shane Apps took down Greer, 6-2, 6-3.
Both teams have just one regular season match left to play in 2009. The Tornados finish their regular season April 18 against Emmanuel College, a 3:30 p.m. contest, while the Bulldogs play at Winthrop Saturday at 2 p.m.
