Parker's strong performance highlights Brevard's afternoon

Brevard, N.C. - Catawba College scored three runs in the 10th inning to beat Brevard College, 6-3, Sunday afternoon at Gil Coan Field, With the win, Catawba (28-15, 16-4 South Atlantic Conference) sweeps the weekend series and assures themselves of the #2 seed in the upcoming SAC Tournament, which starts Thursday.

Nathan Furr (3-0; Albemarle, N.C.) pitched four scoreless innings of relief for the Catawba Indians, picking up the win while fanning seven Tornados. Luke Smithson (1-2; Mills River, N.C.) took the loss for Brevard, allowing three runs in two innings.

Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, N.C.) put Catawba ahead in the 10th with a pinch hit RBI single, and Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C.) added two insurance runs with an RBI double in the extra frame. Earlier, with the Tornados up, 3-1, Ryan Query (Kannapolis, N.C.) tied the game in the 7th with a two-out, two-run home run that just landed fair inside the left field foul poll.

After Lyerly scored on a wild pitch in the 1st to give Catawba the lead, Brevard (10-30, 2-19 SAC) stormed  back with two runs in the 3rd to take a 2-1 advantage. With two out, Brice Warner (Clover, S.C.) coaxed a walk off of Catawba starter Blake Ketner (Davidson, N.C.), and Spencer Linn (Fletcher, N.C.) tied the game with an RBI double. Matthew Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.) followed with a run-scoring two-bagger of his own that gave the home nine the lead.

In the 6th, the Tornados added to the lead. Kellen Moman (Greenville, S.C.) led off the inning with a walk and came home to score on a double from Jason Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C.)

Merrill and Pruitt each had two hits for Brevard, while Payne Parker was spectacular in relief, allowing just one run in 6 1/3 innings on the hill.

The Tornados conclude their 2009 season Tuesday with a doubleheader against Milligan. First pitch at Gil Coan Field is scheduled for 2 p.m. Catawba hosts North Greenville Monday at 4 p.m.
