CARNIE NAMED 1ST TEAM ALL-SAC

First men's golfer to be recognized at Brevard College

Rock Hill, S.C. - Brevard junior golfer Grant Carnie was named 1st team All-South Atlantic Conference Sunday night at the conference's annual awards banquet. Carnie is the first Tornado to be named to the team.

Carnie finished second in the conference with a scoring average of 72.6 stroker per round, and led the Tornados to becoming one of the favorites to win the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament. On the season, Carnie had one first place finish at the Blue Ridge Mountain Challenge, and tied for second at last week's Independent Collegiate Invitational, to go with two other top 10 finishes in the Spring season.

Also recognized at the banquet were Brevard seniors Myles Johnston, Craig Galloway and Chris White, with each receiving the Senior Award, presented to all athletes who participated in a SAC sport as a senior athlete.

Tusculum College’s Chase Carroll, who set a conference record with his scoring average, was named the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Golf Player of the Year and was named the Men’s Golf Scholar-Athlete for the third year in a row, while Newberry College’s Maria Besio, who won one tournament and led the league in scoring average in her first season, was named Women’s Golf Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.

The awards were presented Sunday night at Etowah Valley County Club in Etowah, N.C., where the 2009 Food Lion SAC men’s and women’s golf championships are being held.

Carroll averaged 71.9 strokes this season and had seven top-five finishes in the 10 events he competed in, including winning the Tusculum Fall Classic and Honda Columbia Fall Classic.

Besio led the conference with a 76.4 scoring average in her first season at Newberry. She won the Ralph Hargett Invitational and had two other top-five finishes.

Newberry’s Matthew Campbell, who averaged 74.7 strokes in his first season and had a fourth-place finish in the Honda Columbia Fall Classic and tied for fifth in the Matlock Intercollegiate tournament, was named the SAC’s men’s golf Freshman of the Year.

Newberry’s Brian McCants was named the Men’s Golf Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. Wingate University’s Dr. Jerry Surratt was named Women’s Golf Coach of the Year, also winning for the second year in a row.

Carroll was named the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Golf Scholar Athlete Award, winning the award for the third year in a row, while Wingate’s Kacie Braxton received the Women’s Golf Scholar Athlete Award.

Joining Carroll on the Men’s All-Conference First Team are: Grant Carnie, Brevard College; Brad Robinson, Carson-Newman College; Daniel Stanley, Newberry; and Ben Lown, Newberry.

The second team consists of Liam Ashby, Carson-Newman; Eric Schmehl, Catawba College; Kent George, Lenoir-Rhyne University; Nate Lockey, Mars Hill College and Campbell from Newberry.

Joining Besio on the Women’s All-Conference First Team are: Sarah Jane Sinard, Carson-Newman; Kelsey Babos, Catawba; Mary Ann Vizcarrondo, Tusculum; and Ashley Denton, Wingate.

The second team consists of Brenna Martens, Lenoir-Rhyne; Katie Thackerson, Lenoir-Rhyne; Anna Huzelius, Wingate; Andrea Velasquez, Wingate; and Braxton from Wingate.

Carroll, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn. (Bearden HS) was named the SAC’s Men’s Golf Player of the Year after setting a conference record with a 71.9 stroke average. He has a 3.89 GPA as a business management major and has been named to the Dean’s Lisst, President’s List, Charles Oliver Gray Honors List and SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll. In the community, Carroll volunteers with assisting the homeless, the “Empty Stocking Fund,” and tutoring and mentoring at a local elementary school.

Braxton is a senior from Graham, N.C. (Southern Alamance HS) with a 3.478 GPA, majoring in sports management. This year she had two top-five finishes, including a second-place finish in the Lady Falcon Invitational and shot a career-low 74 in the Tusculum Fall Classic. She was the SAC Freshman of the Year in 2006 and second-team All-Conference this year. Braxton has been named to the Wingate Dean’s List, President’s List and the SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll. She also is a member of the Wingate Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and volunteers for Meals on Wheels.
