Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College softball team wrapped up the 2009 regular season Monday with a split against King College, losing the opener, 7-0, while winning the second game, 7-0. The Tornados finish the regular season with a 17-25 record.
Game One - King 7, Brevard 0
The visiting nine from King homered four times for the victory. Samantha Watts tossed the shutout, allowing just five hits and a walk while striking out one. Jennifer Gift went the distance for Brevard, taking the loss despite striking out nine batters.
Stephanie Mueller, Christy Kooch, Katie Hubbard and Emily Bennett all went deep for King. Bennett also added a run with an RBI single in the 7th.
Brevard's best chance to score came in the fifth inning, when they put runners on 1st and 3rd with one out, but Watts induced an inning-ending double play off the bat of Beth Brooker.
Game Two - Brevard 7, King 0
Brevard turned the tables in the second game, thanks to a dominating performance on the mound from Liz Houser and a home run off the bat of Chelsi Mallory, her third of the season.
Houser went the distance, allowing just five hits while fanning six to pick up her 10th win of the season. Danielle Zimmerman took the loss for King, pitching all six innings and giving up all seven runs.
Mallory's homer came in the 1st inning, a two-run shot that scored Brooker and put the Tornados up, 2-0.
The rest of the scoring came in the 3rd inning. With the bases loaded and two out, Maddie Fletcher was hit by a pitch to start the merry-go-round. Becca Curlee followed with a two-run double and Brooker smacked a two-bagger of her own that scored a pair, making the score 7-0.
Brevard turned the keys over to Houser from there, and the ace did not allow King to seriously threaten the home team for the remainder of the game.
The eighth-seeded Tornados begin the 2009 South Atlantic Conference tournament Thursday, when they face top seed Wingate at 4:45 p.m. in Hickory, N.C.
