Brevard, N.C. - On Monday, July 28th at 2 pm in the Francis Pavilion of The Porter Center for the Performing Arts, Brevard College will make a historic announcement about its athletic programs’ membership status.
In 2007, Brevard College received provisional National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II membership status and was invited as a provisional member of the South Atlantic Conference in February 2007. The athletics programs competed in a full South Atlantic Conference schedule during the 2007-08 academic year, yet were not eligible for championship competition as a provisional member. On Monday, Commissioner Patrick Britz of the South Atlantic Conference will be in attendance as the announcement is made.
Brevard College, founded in 1853, was a member of the NAIA for seven years and applied for membership in the NCAA in the spring 2006. Gaining full membership in the NCAA usually takes around four years, but Brevard is expected to complete this process in half the time. The college supports 18 intercollegiate athletic sports, recently adding, football, cycling and women’s golf to the mix.
The press conference will include comments from Brevard College President Drew Van Horn, new South Atlantic Conference Commissioner Britz, BC Athletics Director Kim Pate, Head Coaches Mike Jones and Paul Hamilton and student-athlete Jessica Guadagno. Refreshments will be served after the conference.
The Brevard community and media are invited and encouraged to attend this event.
