Brevard wins in straight sets, 25-17, 25-23 and 25-16

Brevard, N.C. - Brooke Seaman and Chelsea Larsen again led the way for the Tornados as they swept their Wednesday night match against the host Belmont Abbey Crusaders in straight sets, 3-0.

With the 25-17, 25-23 and 25-16 win, Brevard improves to 4-0 for the season, while Belmont Abbey falls to 0-5.

The Tornados started fast, going out to an early 9-4 lead in game one, using their height at the net as Jordei Osby had a pair of block assists on back-to-back plays with Jamie Atkinson and Larsen and Ashlie Morrison and Seaman added kills.

Belmont Abbey brought it back to a 10-7 game as Steffanie Holler put an attack away off the assist from Molly Gwaltney.

A string of kills by the Tornados preseason All-SAC 1st team selection led the Tornados right back to a commanding lead with a string of kills from her middle hitter position.

Angela Jubb did her best to keep the Crusaders in the first game with a pair of set assists which put the score at 19-15 in favor of Brevard, but a late attack error by Belmont Abbey’s Bria James ended the first game in Brevard’s favor, 25-17.

The momentum from the first set carried over to the second as Brevard again jumped out to an early 10-5 lead behind kills from Seaman, Larsen and Atkinson.

The Crusaders refused to give up though, rallying the game back to 21-20 on Kay Schellenburg’s serve as Jubb and Angelich both put in kills to put the game back within one point.

Larsen put the Tornados over the top with a pair of kills late in the match, including the game-winner off the set from Lindsey Rogers.

Belmont Abbey used their strong comeback in the second game to go up 6-2 at the start of the third game as Hollar, Kirby and Schellenburg all put away kills.

When the Tornados regained the serve, Seaman fired in three service aces in a row to tie the game up at six.

The teams traded points with neither team being able to gain a clear advantage until Brevard went on 9-2 run as Morrison had a pair of kills and Seaman and Larsen combined for four more to give Brevard the 20-13.

The Tornados coasted to the win from there as an attack error by Morgan Kirby ended the match in favor of Brevard, 25-16.

The duo of Larsen and Seaman combined for 22 kills for the Tornados in the three matches. Larsen, a sophomore outside hitter had 12 kills, hitting 36.0% for the match with a block assist, while Seaman had 10 kills (35.0% hitting percentage) to go with her three service aces.

Morrison contributed eight kills for the Tornados and Osby had three block assists as Coach Skeffington’s team matches their longest winning streak of last season with four wins in a row.

Bethany Stevenson recorded 29 assists in the match as the Tornados hit 21.2% from the floor in the game.

Junior libero Rebecca Schoonover again patrolled the backline with 13 digs in the match. Emory contributed seven to go with two set assists.

The Tornados return to host their 2009 home opener on Saturday, September 5th, as they host the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan. First serve for the afternoon match is set for 1 p.m.
