Brevard, N.C. - Despite Sydney Douglas’ spectacular play, saving 17 of the 18 shots she faced, Paige Scott scored a goal for Montevallo with 0:25 left in the second overtime to put the Tornados on the losing end for the first time this season.
Montevallo improved to 3-1 while the Tornados fall to 4-1.
Douglas saved six shots on goal in the first period, including two key saves that bounced in front of her with Falcons charging at 13:06 and 5:22. Allie Hovis shot twice on goal for the Tornados in the first while Bailey Varley shot once totaling three shots on goal for the Tornados in the period.
All four shots that Montevallo goalkeeper, Alyssa Maxwell faced were in regulation.
Maxwell and the Falcons contained the Hovis – Varley scoring duo holding them scoreless with just three combined shots on goal.
The Falcons, once again, shot six times at Douglas in the second period. Douglas had great defensive support including an effort from Kayla Yingst when she stopped a scoring attack in front of the box and gained possession for the Tornados with 15:00 remaining and then with 10:00 left in the period Nikki Peacock knocked a corner kick away from the net.
With the Falcons controlling the ball for most of the first overtime, good defense prevailed once again, this time Jessica Guadagno coming up big to stop a couple Falcon attacks, sending the game into a second overtime.
The second overtime was hard fought and even until Paige Scott finally got one of the Falcons 25 shots into the net with just 0:25 left in the game.
The Tornados will look to rebound from the heartbreaking loss on Tuesday when they travel to North Greenville for a 4 p.m. match.
