Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College tennis team was in action this past weekend for the first time in the 2009-2010 season as the Tornados played host to Coastal Carolina, Western Carolina, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern, UNC Asheville, and Wingate for the first week of the Brevard College Mountain Invitational.
On the men’s side, Coach Paul Thomson placed Andrew Thompson, Scott McCormick, Jonathan Kuhn, Dorian Feron, Shane Apps and Jarred Fisher against teams from UNC Asheville and Wingate.
Thompson went 2-1 on the weekend, defeating Rees (UNCA) 6-2, 6-1, and Prudence (WU) 6-1, 6-4, before falling to Langeard (UNCA) 7-5, 6-4. McCormick dropped his first match to Langeard from (UNCA) 7-5, 6-0, before rallying to win his next two matches 6-4, 6-1 over UNCA’s Waissen and 6-1, 6-2 over Prudence.
The duo also paired up in doubles, defeating Lichtenstein and Rathsam from Wingate 8-3, falling 5-8, to UNCA’s Langeard and Rees, and coming out on top over Nonnebroich/Appelt (UNCA) 8-4.
Kuhn went 2-0 over the weekend, defeating Villaroel (WU) in his first match 6-3, 6-1, and defeated N. White (UNCA) 4-6, 7-6 (4). Feron dropped all three of his matches, falling 6-2, 5-7 (10-8) to Machado (WU), 6-4, 6-2 to Appelt, and was down 6-3, 2-0 to Appelt in another match before retiring.
Apps dropped three matches over the weekend, 6-3, 6-2 to Matthews (UNCA), 7-6 (3), 6-3 to Machado and 6-3, 7-6 (1) to Montemurro (WU), while Fisher went 2-1 on the day, defeating Patchell (WU) 3-6, 6-3 (10-8), Villaroel 6-0, 6-3, before falling to Lichtenstein 6-3, 6-2.
Kuhn and Fisher teamed up for doubles and split their matches over the weekend, winning 9-8 (5) over UNCA’s team of White and Waissen, before falling to Wingate’s Owen and Montemurro 8-5.
The Tornados are back in action on Saturday, September 20th as they host Young Harris at 1:30 p.m.
