Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College tennis team was in action this past weekend for the first time in the 2009-2010 season as the Tornados played host to Coastal Carolina, Western Carolina, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern, UNC Asheville, and Wingate for the first week of the Brevard College Mountain Invitational.
On the women’s side, Coach Paul Thomson placed Lindsay Hostetter, Claire Dillman, Kayley Duval, Kim Dixon, Sara Douglas, Elise Labus, Jennifer Nyman and Merek Slagle in action for the first time this season.
In the Singles A Flight, Hostetter dropped both of her matches, falling to WCU’s Massey 6-2, 6-2 and Wingate’s Stasikelis 7-5, 7-5. Dillman also fell in both of her matches, going 6-1, 6-3 to Ferguson (WU) and 6-2, 6-3 to Craig (WVSU).
Duval and Dixon were Brevard’s representatives in the Singles B Flight, with Duvan winning her opening match against Bowlin (WVSU) 6-1, 6-1, before falling in the quarterfinals to S. Schon from UNC Asheville 6-1, 6-2. Dixon went 1-1 in her matches in the flight, falling to Opala (WU) 7-6, 6-4 and winning 7-5, 4-6 (11-9) over West Virginia State’s Acosta.
In the Singles C Flight, Douglas won her opening match over Western Carolina’s Berry, 7-5, 6-1, before falling in the quarterfinals 6-0, 6-1 to Bottomly (UNCA). Labus also won her first match 6-1, 6-2 over Stewart (WVSU), but fell in the quarterfinals as well 6-4, 6-3 over Mateva (UNCA).
Nyman also played in the C Flight, falling in her first match to Mateva 6-0, 6-0, before rallying to win her elimination match in the backdraw over Stewart (WVSU) 6-4, 7-5. However, Nyman fell in her next match to Black (GWU) to end the day 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles play, Hostetter and Duval went 0-2 in the Doubles A Bracket, falling to the team of Schon/Brinley (UNCA) 8-3 and to Ferguson/Stasikelis (WU) 8-3. In the B Bracket, Dillman and Labus won their first match, defeating Wingate’s Goreski and Hartas 8-6, but fell in the next round to Langmo/Caforio of Georgia Southern, 8-3. In the C Bracket, Dixon and Slagle went 0-2, falling to Bowlin/Stewart 9-8 and Dillard/Opala (WU) 8-5, while Douglas and Nyman split their matches, defeating Dillard/Opala 8-3, before falling 9-7 to Bowlin/Stewart.
The Tornados women’s tennis team is back in action on Saturday, September 20th as they host Young Harris College at 1:30 p.m.
