Hartsville, S.C. - Brooke Seaman and Jamie Atkinson both recorded double-digit kills as the Tornados improved to 7-3 on the season with a 25-16, 25-12, 18-25, 25-13 win over the host Coker Cobras.
Seaman had 13 kills on the day, hitting 22.6% with five total blocks, while Atkinson had 10 kills, hitting 34.8% and two blocks as the Tornados recorded 13 total blocks on the game.
Bethany Stevenson set up the Tornados offense, recording 37 set assists to go with two service aces, while junior libero Rebecca Schoonover led the backline with 18 digs. Caroline Merrill and Chelsey Trojan each had 11 digs for the Tornados as they held Coker to a 3.9% hitting percentage on the day.
The Tornados opened the first set with a 6-2 run as kills by Christin Johnston and Stevenson paced the Brevard attack.
A Coker rally to bring the game back within three was met by a 7-3 run as Trojan fired an ace and the Tornados were helped by a pair of Cobras’ attack errors.
Brevard finished game one on a 9-4 run as Jordei Osby slammed home the last point as the Tornados claimed the first set 25-16.
Seaman served the Tornados to a 10-1 lead at the beginning of set two, placing a service ace and Atkinson recorded a pair of kills as Brevard laid claim to the second game early.
The teams played out the rest of the set evenly, but a kill by Johnston ended the game in BC’s favor, 25-12.
Coker responded to rally and take set three 25-18, going up 15-9 due to a trio of Brevard attack errors. The Tornados fought back to put the game back within two at 17-15, but Lisa Ross was able to put in the last point of the third set to put the score at two games to one.
Coker opened up set four with the first point on a kill by Abby Frame, but the Tornados responded with a 21-11 run to go up 21-12 as Seaman recorded five kills in the run. A kill by Stevenson ended the match in favor of the Tornados at 25-13.
The Tornados jump back into conference play, heading to Wingate, N.C. on Tuesday, September 23rd as they play Wingate University, with first serve coming at 7 p.m.
