Brevard, N.C. – Brevard College football player, Michael Gist, has been named the Tornado Athlete of the Week for week four of the 2009-2010 athletic season, receiving 45.1% of the votes.
Gist, a sophomore from North Augusta, Ga. made five tackles, had two interceptions, including one that he returned 87 yards for a touchtown as the Tornados defeated Southern Virginia 42-7. Gist is now second in the South Atlantic Conference with three interceptions.
Other nominees for week four were Lawrence Martin (football), who received 25.5% of the votes after totaling 36 yards receiving, rushing for 93 yards, and scoring three touchdowns against Southern Virginia, Prince Simunyu (football), who received 13.7% after recording 11 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, a forced fumble, half a sack, and an interception against Southern Virginia, Craig Galloway (Men’s Soccer) received 7.8% of votes after scoring a goal against Winthrop, and Bailey Varley (Women’s Soccer) also received 7.8% of votes after scoring a goal against Lincoln Memorial.
2009-2010 Brevard Tornado Athlete of the Week Winners
Week 1 - Brooke Seaman, Volleyball (34 kills, 41.3% hitting percentage, 13 total blocks, six service aces as Tornados go 3-0 on the week)
Week 2 - Bailey Varley, Women's Soccer (Three goals, including the game winner in double overtime as the Tornados advanced to 3-0)
Week 3 – Stanley Jones, Football (16 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, as the Tornados move to 3-0 on the season)
Week 4 – Michael Gist, Football (Michael Gist-5 tackles, 2 interceptions, including one he ran back 87 yards for a TD
