Tigerville, S.C. - The Tornados and the Crusaders faced off for the second time this season on Tuesday night at Hayes Gymnasium. Brevard, winners of the first match in five games, did not need all five this time in knocking off North Greenville, 25-20, 20-25, 25-17 and 25-17.
With the win, Brevard improves to 10-4, 1-3 in the SAC, while North Greenville falls to 7-12.
Brooke Seaman led all hitters, racking up 14 kills with a 20.0% hitting percentage. Chelsea Larsen added 12 kills and 12 digs to the attack while Ashlie Morrison had nine kills. Bethany Stevenson and Lindsey Rogers set up the attack with 23 assists and 17 assists respectively.
On the defensive side, Rebecca Schoonover had one of the best performances in her career with 27 digs in the four games. Chelsey Trojan added 15 digs and Cori Emory notched eight of her own as the Tornados held the Crusaders to a 5.8% hitting percentage for the contest.
At the net, Seaman had six total blocks, while Jordei Osby, the SAC’s leader at the net, had four.
North Greenville was led by Anjelica Wilcox with 10 kills, hitting 14.3%. Sara Beth White and Charlotte Swain each had five kills to add to the attack. Gabbrielle McKinley had 27 assists for the contest.
On the defensive side, Kaitlyn Harris led the Crusaders with 22 digs, and Kayla OKelly had four blocks.
The Tornados and Crusaders battled throughout the first set with Brevard holding the slight lead at 11-8 on a kill by Morrison.
The teams traded points, but Brevard went up by five on Larsen’s kill to make it 15-10.
The Crusaders were able to bring the game back within three points on several occasions, but an emphatic kill by Seaman clinched game one for the Tornados, 25-20.
North Greenville came out firing in the second set behind Melissa Ragsdale’s serve, going up 11-4 as the sophomore from Pelzer, S.C. put in four acces.
Brevard made a late rally, bringing the game back to 24-20 as Seaman placed an ace, but Lauren Hawkins hammered home the winning point to give game two to the host, 25-20.
The third set was like the first as the Tornados used a 4-1 run to go up 13-9 on Stevenson’s kill off the assist from Schoonover.
The Tornados kept the lead the remainder of the set before Seaman again drove home the winning point as Brevard won the pivotal third set, 25-17.
Smelling blood, the Tornados went for the kill, going up 10-4 on Trojan’s serve as kills by Trojan, Larsen and Atkinson gave Brevard the early lead.
Brevard continued to press as the game went on as back-to-back kills by Larsen put the game at 19-8.
North Greenville attempted a late rally, going on a 9-4 run, but a service ace by Larsen finished the match in favor of the Tornados, 25-17.
Brevard returns home to Boshamer Gymnasium to face SAC opponent Lincoln Memorial on Friday, October 2nd, at 6 p.m.
