Brevard, N.C. – For the second week in a row, a Brevard College volleyball player has been named the Tornado Athlete of the Week. This week Rebecca Schoonover, a 5-0 Libero, won the vote with an overwhelming 69.4% of the votes.
Schoonover, a junior from Palm City, Fla., recorded 68 digs this week, in three matches, averaging 22.7 per match.
Other nominees this week were football’s Eric Watts, women’s soccer player Alyssa Caracena, and men’s soccer’s Ryan Guill. Watts finished with 22.4% of the votes after averaging 44.3 yards per punt, including a 68 yarder to go with a touchdown reception. Guill finished with 6.1% after scoring his first collegiate goal against North Georgia while Caracena finished with 2% of the votes after scoring the game winning goal against Converese.
2009-2010 Brevard Tornado Athlete of the Week Winners
Week 1 – Brooke Seaman, Volleyball (34 kills, 41.3% hitting percentage, 13 total blocks, six service aces as Tornados go 3-0 on the week)
Week 2 – Bailey Varley, Women's Soccer (Three goals, including the game winner in double overtime as the Tornados advanced to 3-0)
Week 3 – Stanley Jones, Football (16 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, as the Tornados move to 3-0 on the season)
Week 4 – Michael Gist, Football (5 tackles, 2 interceptions, including one he ran back 87 yards for a TD
Week 5 – Brooke Seaman, Volleyball (27 kills, 31.7 hitting percentage, 13 total blocks, 2 service aces as the Tornados go 2-1 on the week)
Week 6 – Rebecca Schoonover, Volleyball (68 digs in three matches, averaging 22.7 per match.)
