Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College athletics department is pleased to announce the hiring of Shannon Reid as the new head women’s basketball coach for the Tornados.
Coach Reid comes to Brevard after one year as the assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Albany, a NCAA Division I program in Albany, New York. While at Albany, Reid was in charge of academics, scheduling scouting and recruiting while her on the court duties included guard development and defensive strategies and concepts. Reid received 2008 “Coach of the Year” honors as the team finished No. 28 in the nation in team steals and posted an 11-7 America East Conference, a program record.
"We are extremely excited to have Coach Reid on board to lead our women's basketball program into NCAA Division II,” stated BC Athletic Director Kim Pate. “Coach Reid has an affinity for NCAA Division II athletics and understands the unique opportunity to develop the whole student-athlete. It is obvious her success as a player, as well as a coach have been a product of her passion and determination. I have no doubt she will build a competitive program in the South Atlantic Conference.”
Prior to heading north and coaching at the University of Albany, Reid spent two seasons at Clayton State University in Morrow, Ga., where she helped lead the Lakers to the 2007 NCAA Division II Final Four. Clayton State finished 29-6 overall in 2006-07 and captured a Peach Belt Conference championship. The Lakers, who were ranked as high as fourth nationally, made a second-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Prior to her appointment at Clayton State, Reid was an assistant at the University of South Carolina-Aiken, a Division II program in the Peach Belt Conference. Reid helped lead the Pacers to a 19-13 record and an NCAA appearance.
Reid played professionally for the Ladies National League in Dublin, Ireland from 2003-04. A native of Hudson, N.C., Reid earned her bachelor’s degree in sports management from Pfeiffer University in 2003. Reid, a three-year member of the Pfeiffer women’s basketball team, was named Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) Player of the Year and was a two-time all-CVAC first-team honoree. Reid, who scored more than 1,000 career points in her career for the Falcons, led her team to its first-ever NCAA Tournament. She was a two-time team MVP and the university’s athlete of the year.
“I am real excited for Shannon and I know that she will do a great job,” commented current Catawba College Head Women’s Basketball Coach Angie Morton, who coached Reid at Pfeifer University. “I am excited for Brevard College for hiring one of the best up incoming young coaches. Shannon is exactly what the program needs as they join our league.”
Last season, the Tornados finished 8-19, playing a full South Atlantic Conference as provisional members. In 2008-09, the Tornados will look to complete as full NCAA Division II members as well as a full member of the South Atlantic Conference.
