Brevard, N.C. - The Tornados hosted South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night in Boshamer Gymnasium as the Mars Hill Lions came into town. Brevard fought hard, but the Tornados ultimately fell in four sets, 25-21, 25-22, 19-25 and 25-22.
With the loss, Brevard falls to 11-7, 1-6 in South Atlantic Conference action, while the Lions improve to 9-8, 2-6 in conference play.
Brooke Seaman led the Tornados with nine kills and had another spectacular game at the net, recording six blocks. Chelsey Trojan contributed eight kills and 13 digs to the contest, while Jamie Atkinson and Jordei Osby had seven and six kills respectively.
Bethany Stevenson recorded 17 set assists for the match and Lindsey Rogers added 15 to contribute to the Tornados attack.
On the defensive side, Rebecca Schoonover added 15 digs, while Osby continued her strong play at the net, recording nine blocks.
Laura Ann Huskey and Jenna Luke each recorded double-digit kill games with 12 and 11 respectively for the Lions. Sarah Paquette set up the Mars Hill attack with 35 digs.
On the backline, Huskey recorded a game-high 20 digs, while Kelsi Flora added 19 digs to the mix.
All four sets went back and forth throughout the evening as the teams tied up the score 29 times.
This was evident in the first set as neither team was able to have more than a three point advantage until late in the match, as Brevard opened with a slight lead at 11-9 as Osby, Chelsea Larsen, Jamie Atkinson and Seaman connected early.
Mars Hill came back to go up with the largest lead in the game at 21-16 as Danielle Mason and Evie Tafunai responded with kills.
Brevard was able to bring the game back within two, but an attack error by Seaman ended the match in favor of the guests, 25-21.
The Tornados opened up the second game with a 7-4 lead thanks to kills by Larsen and Atkinson.
Mars Hill responded with a 6-0 run sparked by several BC attack errors.
The Lions would retain the lead in the set until back-to-back kills by Trojan tied the game up at 12.
The teams would swap points, until Mars Hill used a 3-0 run capped by a kill by Jenna Luke to ride to victory, 25-22.
The Tornados and the Lions swapped points in the early part of the set, before Brevard used a 4-0 run to take the lead as Schoonover fired in a pair of aces to start the run.
The lead advanced to five at 15-10 as Trojan added an ace to the attack.
Mars Hill was able to cut into the lead several times, but a kill by Seaman pushed the game to a fourth set at 25-19.
Brevard opened up the fourth set with a 5-1 run as Rogers put in a service ace and Christin Johnston placed a kill.
The Lions clawed back, tying the game up at 10 as Huskey completed the comeback with a kill.
The teams continued to swap points as the score reached a 20-20 tie.
Mars Hill broke the tie eventually as Luke placed in the go-ahead kill and Traci Teague finished the game at 25-22.
The Tornados are back in action Saturday, October 10th, as Brevard hosts Tusculum in Boshamer Gymnasium. First serve is set for 1 p.m. Mars Hill’s next action is also against Tusculum, on the road on Tuesday, October 13th in Greeneville, Tenn.
