Brevard, N.C. – Brevard College football player Eric Watts has been named this week’s Tornado Athlete of the Week. Watts won the edge in voting with 37.7% of the 77 votes cast after being named the Special Teams Player of the week by the South Atlantic Conference on Monday.
Watts, a 6-4 sophomore from Powhatan, Va., caught the game winning touchdown pass in overtime and launched a 75 yard punt in the second quarter while averaging 45.4 yards per punt. Watts leads the SAC in punting yardage, averaging 41.3 yards per punt.
Other nominees this week were volleyball’s Chelsea Trojan who came in a close second with 36.4% of the votes for her contribution this week, recording 23 kills, 24 digs, 2 blocks, and 4 service aces. Football’s Michael Gist received 13% of the votes after returning an interception for a touchdown and making a key stop on the goal line to hold Tusculum’s offense to a field goal. Women’s soccer player Chantel Azevedo received 7.8% of votes for scoring a goal and assisting on the other two Tornado goals in a 3-0 win over Warren Wilson, while teammate Bailey Varley finished with 5.2% of votes after scoring two goals against Warren Wilson.
2009-2010 Brevard Tornado Athlete of the Week Winners
Week 1 – Brooke Seaman, Volleyball (34 kills, 41.3% hitting percentage, 13 total blocks, six service aces as Tornados go 3-0 on the week)
Week 2 – Bailey Varley, Women's Soccer (Three goals, including the game winner in double overtime as the Tornados advanced to 3-0)
Week 3 – Stanley Jones, Football (16 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, as the Tornados move to 3-0 on the season)
Week 4 – Michael Gist, Football (5 tackles, 2 interceptions, including one he ran back 87 yards for a TD
Week 5 – Brooke Seaman, Volleyball (27 kills, 31.7 hitting percentage, 13 total blocks, 2 service aces as the Tornados go 2-1 on the week)
Week 6 – Rebecca Schoonover, Volleyball (68 digs in three matches, averaging 22.7 per match.)
Week 7 – Eric Watts, game winning TD catch, two catches for 67 yards, launched a 75 yard punt in the second quarter, averaged 45.4 yards per punt.
