Brevard, N.C. - Richard Ray blocked a punt and then returned it for the game winning touchdown earning 64.5% of this week’s votes and the honor of Week 10 Tornado Athlete of the Week.
Ray blocked the punt with 5:33 remaining in the game and ran 12 yards to score the Tornados’ only touchdown. The score led to a 7-6 Brevard victory and a 7-3 overall record this year.
Other nominees this week were Stanley Jones, who recorded 16 total tackles and 2 for loss, the women’s soccer team after becoming the fifth BC team to make a conference tournament, Brooke Seaman who recorded 27 kills, 5 total blocks, and 3 services aces, and Jack Shaw who saved 8 of 11 and faced 24 total shots.
2009-2010 Brevard Tornado Athlete of the Week Winners
Week 1 – Brooke Seaman, Volleyball (34 kills, 41.3% hitting percentage, 13 total blocks, six service aces as Tornados go 3-0 on the week)
Week 2 – Bailey Varley, Women's Soccer (Three goals, including the game winner in double overtime as the Tornados advanced to 3-0)
Week 3 – Stanley Jones, Football (16 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, as the Tornados move to 3-0 on the season)
Week 4 – Michael Gist, Football (5 tackles, 2 interceptions, including one he ran back 87 yards for a TD
Week 5 – Brooke Seaman, Volleyball (27 kills, 31.7 hitting percentage, 13 total blocks, 2 service aces as the Tornados go 2-1 on the week)
Week 6 – Rebecca Schoonover, Volleyball (68 digs in three matches, averaging 22.7 per match.)
Week 7 – Eric Watts,football (Game winning TD catch, two catches for 67 yards, launched a 75 yard punt in the second quarter, averaged 45.4 yards per punt.
Week 8 – Jo Tuttle, Cycling (Overall National Champion in Mountain Bike, National Champion in the Four-Cross event)
Week 9 – Matthew Crowe, Cross-Country (placed 14th at SAC Championship, named second team All-Conference and All-Freshmen.
Week 10 – Richard Ray, Football (Blocked punt and returned it 12 yards for game winning TD)
