Due West, S.C. - Brevard opened their 2009-2010 season Monday night against non-conference opponent Erskine College. After converting on just three foul shots in the first half, All-SAC selection Samantha Winn scored 19 points in the second half to lead the Tornados with 22 points and 17 rebounds. However, Winn’s double-double was not enough to match Aubrey Timmerman who scored 26 points and recorded 7 steals for the Flying Fleet as the Tornados fell 78-73.
The Flying Fleet begin their season 1-0, while the Tornados go 0-1.
Brianna Worley won the opening tip for the Tornados and scored the team’s first points when she sunk a shot from beyond the arc for Brevard’s first three points. Timmerman’s off-ball defense led to the Flying Fleets’ first points as turnovers plagued the Tornados allowing Erskine to score 15 points off of 17 turnovers in the first half.
The Tornados saw as big as a ten point deficit in the second half before going on a run to take a two point lead with under ten minutes remaining. Amanda Whitaker, who added 11 points and 7 rebounds for Brevard, was charged with her fifth foul late in the second half sending the Flying Fleet to the charity stripe. After converting on both foul shots, Erskine gained momentum and took back the lead in a game that saw a total of nine lead changes and seven ties
The Tornados came back within reach in the last minute of play threatening to tie or take the lead, but were held off by the Flying Fleet who converted on foul shots to keep the Tornados at a safe five point distance with just seconds remaining for the win.
The Tornados will return to action this weekend when they travel to Jefferson City for a two game series against King Friday night and Converse Saturday night at Carson-Newman.
