Jefferson City, Tenn. - Samantha Winn recorded a double-double for the second game in a row and the eleventh time in her career scoring 20 points and pulling down 12 rebounds Friday night in a 73-67 overtime loss to King College in the Lady Eagle Shootout. Brianna Worley chipped in 16 while Holli Flippo scored 15 for Brevard.
Brevard falls to an early 0-2 record, while King improves to 2-1.
Worley shot 6 for 9 from the field and 2 for 4 from beyond the arc in the first half leading the Tornados with 15 points. The Tornados commanded as much as an eight point lead before King scored six buckets to Brevard’s one in the final minutes cutting Brevard’s lead to 34-30 going into the half.
Flippo led the Tornados into the second half scoring the team’s first nine points to put the Tornados up 43-30 just three minutes into the second half. Brevard went on to outscore King 11-2 in the first five minutes.
King College used full court pressure to cut Brevard's lead to two with under two minutes remaining. Amanda Whitaker’s fourth foul sent Allison Bosse to foul line with 1:38 left on the clock. Bosse converted on one of the foul shots to cut Brevard’s lead to 57-56. A shot clock violation gave King the ball back within the last minute, but Asheley Watkins forced a turnover giving the Tornados possession with 55 seconds left. Winn converted on the other end for Brevard giving the Tornados a three point lead.
The three point lead would not be enough for Brevard, who fouled Beth Raby on a three point shot with seconds remaining. Raby, with the game one the line, made all three tying the score 59-59 and sending the game into overtime.
In overtime, King took their first lead since the first minutes of the game. The Tornados did not score until the 3:35 mark when Lindsay Brendle converted on a foul shot to make the score 63-60 in favor of King. Mooney sealed the deal for King with a three pointer at the 2:20 mark putting King up 68-60 and also scored the last points of the game with two free throws to make the final 73-67.
The Tornados are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Converse College at 5 p.m. in second day action at the Lady Eagle Shootout.
