Winn records third double-double of the season in the loss

Athens, Tenn. - Samantha Winn notched her third double-double of the season with an 18 point, 11 rebound performance, but a desperation three-pointer by Ashton Burrell and a 9-4 run to close out the overtime period gave the Lady Bulldogs the victory, 79-74.

Winn led four Brevard (1-3) players in double figures as Brianna Worley had 16 points, going 4-5 from behind the arc, while Anna Schlobohm had 13 points to go with eight rebounds and four assists and Holli Flippo had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

The Tornados went 27-65 (41.5 percent) from the floor in the game, but 23 turnovers proved to be their undoing as Brevard falls for the third time on the road this season.

TWC (5-2) was led by Lindsey Jackson with 21 points, connecting six times from behind the arc. Ragan Elliot had a double-double for the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Amy Jo Castor had 13 points. Katie Blevins set up the attack with 12 points and six assists.

Tennessee Wesleyan came out firing to start the game, with 16 of their 38 shots in the opening half coming from behind the arc. With the three-point attack, the Lady Bulldogs were able to build a 15-5 lead less than 10 minutes into the game as three different TWC players connected from distance.

The Tornados battled back behind the duo of senior forward Samantha Winn and sophomore forward Lindsay Brendle as the two combined for 15 points and nine rebounds in the first half. Brevard brought the game back within three points at 25-22 as Winn hit a three-pointer with 2:39 remaining in the opening half. Brendle would contribute a free throw less than a minute later to cut the lead down to two before a three by Lady Bulldogs Heather Gibson expanded the lead back to 28-23.

Anna Schlobohm connected from behind the arc for the Tornados with 57 seconds remaining in the period and the score would stand at 28-26 as the teams headed to the locker room.

Brianna Worley came out of the halftime break with the hot hand, connecting on her first three attempts from behind the arc as Brevard opened up a 10 point lead with 15:05 to go as the Tornados went up 44-34. The lead would stand for five minutes before a three-pointer by Lady Bulldogs’ Lindsey Jackson tied the score up 51. Brevard would go up by eight points twice more in the second half as Holli Flippo went in for a layup with 5:01 remaining and Amanda Whitaker hit a jumper in the short corner to put the score at 63-55 with 4:11 on the clock.

Tennessee Wesleyan kept the game within striking distance, but a pair of free throws by Schlobohm put the Tornados up by three with seven second remaining on the clock at 65-62. The Lady Bulldogs found Heather Gibson on the left wing and she launched a shot that hit the net as time expired, pushing the game into overtime.

The Tornados opened the overtime period with a three point lead as Winn and Whitaker each hit free throws, but another Lady Bulldog three-pointer tied the game up at 70 with 2:38 remaining. Tennessee Wesleyan closed out the game, scoring nine of the next 13 points as the Lady Bulldogs won the game, 79-74.

The Tornados return home for their first game of the season in Boshamer Gymnasium, as Brevard will host Limestone College. Tip-off between the Tornados and the Lady Saints is set for 2 p.m.
