Brevard, N.C. - Samantha Winn led the Tornados past the Limestone Saints Saturday night with 23 points and 8 rebounds. Brevard had led just once in regulation before tying the game and handling Limestone in overtime, 73-69.
The win boosts Brevard to a 2-3 record, while Limestone falls to 3-2.
The Tornados saw their largest lead in regulation just four minutes into the game when they led the Saints 6-4. Freshman forward, Tempestt Mack contributed 8 points for the Tornados in the first half who went into the intermission down 41-26.
Brevard trailed Limestone, led by Maria Young’s 21 points, by as much as 17 points in the second half. The Tornados then went on a 13-2 run led by Holli Flippo’s steal taken coast to coast for a lay in and a three point shot cutting the score to 45-39 at the 14:10 mark.
The Tornados finally battled back to tie the game 56-56 with 4:25 left. However, Limestone regained the lead a minute later on a Whitney Todd shot to make the score 58-56 in favor of the Saints. The teams went scoreless for almost three minutes before Flippo found Winn for a jumper to knot the score for the fifth time, 58-58 with 0:26 on the clock.
Brevard, led by Winn’s 8 points, did not trail in overtime. The steady foul shooting of Amanda Whitaker and Anna Schlobohm secured the victory with minutes left, leading the team to a 75% free throw mark as they handed Limestone their second loss of the season with a 73-69 final.
Brevard will return to action on Monday night at 6:00 p.m. in Boshamer Gymnasium taking on King College after losing to them just a week ago 73-67 in overtime.
