Brevard, N.C. - The Tornados handled Truett-McConnell Thursday night, despite double double efforts by Symone Hampton with 25 points and 13 rebounds, and Terra Hancock with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Samantha Winn scored 22 points in 22 minutes of play leading the Tornados to the 90-73 victory.
The win boosts the Tornados to 4-3, their first winning record as a member of NCAA division II, while the Bears fall to 0-12.
Brevard shot 50% from the field in the first half, led by Winn’s 5-7 shooting performance. The Tornados and Bears remained close through the first few minutes of play until a Tornados12-0 run allowed Brevard to command a lead that they would not lose for the rest of the game.
Brevard led 51-36 at the intermission and increased their lead to as many as 26 points in the second half. Holli Flippo chipped in 12 points, going 2-2 from behind the arc in the second half and 3-5 in the game.
Brianna Worley also saw double figures with 11, making 3 three pointers and shooting 4-6 over all. Lindsay Brendles’ 10 point performance made four Tornados with double digit scoring figures.
Defensively, the Tornados stole the ball away 13 times with nine players having at least one steal. Tempestt Mack contributed 3 blocked shots and a steal to Brevard’s defensive effort while Amanda Whitaker recorded 2 blocked shots and 2 steals to hold off the Bears, led by Hampton’s 15 points and 10 rebounds in the second half.
Brevard will be back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they meet Tusculum at home in their first SAC competition of the season.
