Tusculum defeats Brevard 84-81

Brevard, N.C. - Samantha Winn’s 32 point effort was not enough to hold off their first SAC opponent, Tusculum, led by the 16 points of Catherine Hintz and Kat Spears’ 12 points and 12 rebounds as the Tornados fell 84-81 in an overtime thriller at Boshamer Gymnasium.

The loss breaks Brevard’s three game win streak and puts them at 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference, while the Pioneers improve to 3-1 and 1-0 in the SAC.

Tusculum came out flat shooting just 28% in the first half, but out-rebounded Brevard 28-14 to keep the Pioneers close. Winn and Holli Flippo led the Tornados to a 43.3% field goal percentage in the half each shooting 4-7 from the field. Flippo’s three pointer at 11:17 began a 7-0 Tornados run, giving them a 7 point lead, their biggest lead of the game.

After trailing for most of the first half, Tusculum turned their 28% field goal percentage into 64% led by Staci Hicks and shot 3-3 from the field and 3-3 from the foul line in the second half. The Pioneers took the lead seven minutes in and held on to it until a LindsayBrendle jumper gave the Tornados a one point advantage with 3:51 remaining.

Hintz connected on a jumper and a foul shot to give the Pioneers a 72-70 lead, until a Jasmine Gunn foul at 1:55 put Anna Schlobohm on the foul line allowing Brevard to tie the game for the seventh time. The tie did not last long as Kendal Baxter found Hintz in the paint again to give the Pioneers a 74-72 lead with 1:39 on the clock.

Then with 30 seconds remaining, Winn made a jumper tying the game 74-74 and sending Brevard into overtime for the fourth time this year.

Brianna Worley began the overtime period with a three pointer assisted by Amanda Whitaker, who led the Tornados with 7 assists. With 2:00 remaining the Pioneers took the lead back for good on a Jasmine Parker jump shot, followed two Gunn free throws putting Brevard down 84-81.

Winn threatened to send the game into a double overtime with a three pointer with just seconds remaining, but was unable to connect when her shot rattled out and time expired.

The Tornados will return to action on December 17, when Belmont Abbey travels to Brevard for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
