Mars Hill tops Brevard 85-76 in overtime

Mars Hill, N.C. - The Lions of Mars Hill needed overtime to defeat the Tornados, led by the 24 points and 16 rebounds of the conference leading scorer, Samantha Winn. The Lions upended Brevard 85-76 led by Brittini Young’s 24 points and a double double of their own in Taylor Deal with 21 points and 15 rebounds.

The loss drops Brevard to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in the South Atlantic Conference, while the victorious Lions improve to 4-8 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

The jumpstart Lions controlled the first ten minutes of the game, out scoring the Tornados 32-10. The Tornados chipped away at the lead with a 9-0 run led by the six points, two assists, two rebounds, and steal of freshman Asheley Watkins in just four minutes. Watkins would finish the game with three steals, four assists, and five rebounds.

Brevard continued the run, extending it to 18-0 before Mars Hill finally scored with 2:23 left in the half when Beth Miller converted on a foul shot. Krystal Moore helped the Lions cause by making a last second, half-court shot to make the score 38-31.

Brevard outscored the Lions 21-6 in final ten minutes of the half, led by Watkin’s and Amanda Whitaker’s six points.

Mars Hill maintained their lead through the second half. Brevard did not tie or lead the game until a pair of Winn free throws tied the game, 62-62 with 1:40 remaining. Mars Hill regained their lead, but a pair of shots from beyond the arc kept the Tornados battling.
First, a Holli Flippo three pointer with eight seconds remaining, then a last second Winn three pointer sent the game into overtime tied 70-70.

The Lions outscored the Tornados 17-8 in overtime making the final 85-76.

Anna Schlobohm chipped in 13 points, to be one of only two Tornados to reach double figures, and also led the team with five assists, and a blocked shot. Mars Hill boasted four players in double figures, as Krystal Moore and Katie  Buckner joined Young and deal with 13 and 10 points respectively.

The Tornados will return to action on Wednesday, January, 6 when Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Brevard for a 6:00 p.m. game.
