TORNADOS FALL TO LIONS, 13-12

Second game suspended due to impending darkness

Brevard, N.C. - The Tornados hosted Mars Hill College for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Gil Coan Field to complete the season series. The Lions rallied to take the first game 13-12, while the second game was suspended to be continued on Sunday afternoon.

Kellen Moman drove in six runs for the Tornados, connecting on a pair of home runs in the contest, but Mike Kitt connected on a three-run blast in the top of the ninth inning for his second home run of the contest to propel the Lions to the 13-12 victory.

Mathew Pruitt (0-1) took the loss for the Tornados in the first game, pitching the ninth inning and giving up all three runs. Greg Smith (1-0) pitched the last two innings for the Lions to record his first win of the season.

The Tornados opened the scoring in the contest, pushing across a run in the bottom of the first as Pruitt drove in Eric Renegar with a fielder’s choice, following Kramer Clark’s double, but Mars Hill responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second as Patrick Davidson and Dalton Hardee each drove in runs to give the Lions the 2-1 lead.

Mars Hill pushed a pair of runs across in the third as Brandon Savoca and Jason Sinclair hit sacrifice flies to clear the bases, and plated another run in the fourth as Kitt drove a 1-2 offering from Tornados starter Brennan Daniels over the left centerfield fence to push the score up to 5-1.

Moman responded for Brevard in the bottom of the fourth, following Stephen Mullis’ four-pitch walk with a two-run shot that cleared the left centerfield fence to put the score at 5-3.

Hardee drove in another run in the fifth, scoring Sinclair, but BC relief pitcher Joseph Lepore escaped a two-out jam with an inning-ending double play.

The Tornados responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth as Moman singled to left to drive in Clark, while Jackie Corn hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Pruitt as Brevard closed the gap to 6-5 after five.

The Tornados exploded in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs in the frame to go up 9-6 as Mullis singled through the right side with one out to score Ben Pacey and Moman followed with his second home run of the game, this time a three-run shot that cleared the bases to give the Tornados the lead.

Brevard pushed across two more runs in the seventh as Clark drove in Renegar and Mullis drove in Clark as the Tornados went up by five with two innings to play.

Mars Hill responded with a seven-run comeback covering the eighth and ninth innings, capping it with Kitt’s three-run home run off Pruitt to drive in Hardee and Kris Torrance to put the Lions up 13-11.

Renegar cut the lead back to one with a one-out solo home run next to the scoreboard in right field in the bottom of the ninth, but Brevard was unable to capitalize in falling in game one.

Game Two:

The second game of the doubleheader was called due to the potential coming of nightfall, with Mars Hill leading 14-5 in the top of the sixth inning. The game will be resumed from that point on Sunday, February 21st, with first pitch coming at 1 p.m.
