Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team scored five runs in the first inning but Mars Hill put up 22 runs in a four-inning stretch to sweep the double header and series against the Tornados with a 22-6 win Sunday at Gil Coan Field.
Kellen Moman doubled down the right field line to drive in Kramer Clark to give the Tornados (0-5, 0-3) an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Stephen Mullis followed with a single to center to plate Moman. Jackie Corn and Ron Patterson hit consecutive doubles, with Patterson’s coming on an 0-2 pitch and driving in two runs. Matt Ennis capped the five run frame with an RBI single through the left side to bring home Patterson and give the Tornados a large early lead.
Mars Hill (5-2, 3-0) made a two-out rally in the top of the third to get within two. Mike Kitt was hit by a pitch from Tornado starter Matthew Pruitt. Devin Presnell followed with a single to right and Kitt scored from first. After Presnell stole second and Rusty Smith walked Adam Lewis doubled down the right left field line to make the score 5-3.
The Lions added six more runs in the fourth on six hits and benefited from two Tornado errors. Mars Hill scored five runs in the fifth inning, helped by RBI doubles from Kitt and Brandon Savoca.
The Lions scored eight runs on four hits. Kitt drew a bases loaded walk to earn another RBI. Presnell followed with a bases clearing double to left and Matt Harris added an RBI single to right. Paul Davidson continued the scoring with a two-run homer to right field.
Jacob Koontz set the Lions down in order in the seventh, striking out Ben Hunt swinging and Rob Dobbins looking, and inducing a 6-3 groundout to Matt Harris.
Brevard added a final run in the bottom of the seventh. Moman led off the inning with a double to right center and later scored on a Corn single.
Kyle Dietrich pitched a third of an inning to win his first game of the season. Pruitt worked three and two-thirds and suffered his second loss of the year. Patterson finished 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Moman went 2-3, scored twice and added an RBI.
Brevard returns to action Wednesday February 24 at King College for a 2 p.m. first pitch. Mars Hill hosts Montreat Tuesday February 23 at 2:30 p.m.
