2009-2010 Events

January 25, 2010 - The Brevard College softball team reached out for the holidays by adopting a family through the Sharing House Organization. The team reached out to a single mother with two children, purchasing gifts, while spending time with the family of three. October 12, 2009 - The Brevard soccer student-athletes took time out of their busy schedules on Monday to give back to the community and put on a soccer clinic at the Recreation Department. The local youth of the TYSA Crush U12 co-ed team participated in the clinic that included drills and individual instruction by the Tornado players.

2008-2009 Events

August 28, 2008 - As part of the Move a Mountain Service project at Brevard College on Tuesday, August 26th, the women's soccer team helped at with the clean up of downtown Brevard. November 13, 2008 - The Brevard Women's Basketball team volunteered their time at the Brevard Boys & Girls Club. Tornado hoopsters played basketball with children, helped with homework, and spoke to children about the importance of getting an education.

November 13, November 20, 2008 - The Brevard Softball team volunteered at the Bread of Life organization. The team spent their two days at the organization helping in food prepartion and learning about the non-profit organization.

November 21 - On Friday night, November 21, the Brevard College Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and cooperation with the Brevard College Athletics department and the BC athletic teams, hosted Kids Night Out in Boshamer Gymnasium for children ages 5 to 13.  The student-athletes participated in a number of events with over 30 kids in the gym and in the recreation room.  The children competed and participated in games ranging from basketball, dodge ball and video games, to doing arts and crafts and face painting alongside over 50 BC student-athletes throughout the night.  The proceeds of the event went to Make-A-Wish Foundation and the SAAC.

December 6, 2008 - The Brevard College men's baseball team helped to light up the town of Brevard during the Christmas Festival and the Twilight Tour.  The Tornados participated in the parade, helped to work and man booths and stations during the fesitival, constructed and participated in the Twilight Tour and was part of the clean up crew at the conclusion of the festivities.  This is the fourth year that the men's baseball team has helped the Heart of Brevard with this event.

December 6, 2008 - The Brevard College Athletic Department participated in the Brevard/Transylvania Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade on December 6th. The Tornados had 170 student-athletes participate in the event as they marched alongside the Athletic Department float along with the mascot of the Tornados, “Tommy Twister.”

December 8, 2008 - On Monday, December 8, a number of Brevard College men’s football student-athletes helped present 23 students at Rosman Elementary School with the purchase of a number of books.  The BC football program purchased over $172 worth of books for the elementary school kids and spent some quality time with the Rosman Elementary School Battle of the Books Team.  The students, who ranged from grades 3-5, were served snacks and tutored by the BC student-athletes in preparation of their Battle of the Books competition coming up. The Tornados also talked about the importance and value of a good education and presented a signed game ball Head Football Coach Paul Hamilton to the students and Principal Donna Rasta which read “Brevard College and Rosman Elementary are both Champions because they know the importance of reading.”

December 10, 2008 - The Brevard College softball team reached out to the community again on December 10th, when they adopted a local family for Christmas through The Sharing House Organization. The team reached out with their hearts, money and time, as they provided food, toys and clothing for a family of three. The Sharing House Organization is the organization that helps make this wonderful act of kindness possible. They receive hundreds of applications each year who ask for assistance for providing their family with Christmas. The applicants are from various backgrounds, from a single person, to a single parent with kids, the elderly, and families with children. Through the team's efforts, they were able to help at least one family in need. February 18, 2009 - Brevard College Tornados hosted its WBCA Pink Zone™ on Wednesday, February 18, against Carson-Newman. The WBCA Pink Zone™ initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone™, formerly known as "Think Pink", in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities.  In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success.  In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research. $635 was raised for the WBCA Kay Yow Fund for Breast Cancer Awareness through donations, gate proceeds and remembrance ribbon sales during the game between the Tornados and the Eagles. February 21, 2009 - The students of Tryon Elementary School and the Brevard Student Athlete Advisory Committee came together to raise funds for the Make A Wish Foundation. Make A Wish is a foundation that is built around giving hope, strength and joy to children with life-threatening medical conditions and currently is able to grant a child's wish in the U.S. every 40 minutes. Together the two organizations were able to raise $275 for the Make A Wish Foundation. For more information, go to www.wish.org
